KANSAS CITY STOCK MARKET.
A NATION OF SAVERS.
ranchman Are Thrifty and Invast In
Government Bends.
If you were a Frenchman with
very small surplus to luvest. If even
that aurpju were but a modest franc
you might Ixvome the bolder of a
French government bond. From tbo
cradle to the grave the French sub-
ject Is taught to save and to turn his
earnings Into safe Income producing
account says Charles P pea re In the
ltevlcw of Itevlews.
The atate ays a premium on thrift.
It reward Ita school children fur varl-
oua good erfortiuines with a tiny
bank deoalt which Invariably will
have grown Into goodly slse when the
recipient bss reached maturity. Hav-
ing nursed Its people through the early
stsges of economy. It directs their
steps lu the choice of Investments and
even aaaunies paternal power In arbi-
trarily tranaformlug the savings bank
account Into government bonds or
rentes. Thrift is a national charac-
teristic. France Is a nation of little
savers of little Incomes and of little
farms.
Collectively these exercise a tremen-
dous power on U-e affslrs of Europe.
The holder of e one or two franc
bond and the xmeaor of the bank
account so small that bankers of oth-
er countries would scorn it have built
up a monetary power that commands
the reaect of the world and Indeed
renulatee the finances and politics of
much mere presumptuous nations.
Bonds of ststes and governments of
railroads with a government guaran-
tee bonds of cities and towns of mort-
gage com pa u lea. are the Frenchman's
choice. It Is safe to say that lu Paris
coupons are cut from the bouds of
Desrly every government tinder the
sun.

Quarantine cattle are running to mar
act very freely receipts here last
week 601 car loads and the run In Urn
i quarantine division today aggregates
4S4 car loads. Prices advanced 25 to
35 cents on Quarantine itwri i.t
week rows up 10 to 15 cents for the
week. The good market last week
drew out the big run today and the
market la 10 to 20 cents below the
good close of last week In most cases.
Several big strings of 1050 to 1200 lb
steers raked ou the graas sold today
at $5.15 to 15.60. straight grass steers
at $4 00 to $4.75. with a few outside
sales of uage steers nt $5.00 and a
small number of low grade ateera un-
der $4.00. Some caked ateera reached
$!.(M) laat week. Cowa bring $3.00 to
$1.50 tops In the laat week at $4.K0
and heat vcala $7.:'... Calves are off
25 to 50 cents today. Corn fed cattle
In the native division are selling at
firm prices and will no doubt so con-
tinue indefinitely as the supply of
same U growing smaller each week
top steers today $7.00 both In the
heavy weight and yearling classes.
Mild fluctuations In the bog market
left It practically unchanged at the
close of laat week from the close of
the week before but the small run of
4O0 head today excited sharp compe-
tition and prices are 10 to 15 cents
higher. Tops sold at $7.95 today bulk
of sales $7.50 to $7.90. light hoga up
to $7.h0. The coat of packers droves
of hogs here laat few days have been
5 to 10 cents above the cost of ssme
packers' drovers in Chicago although
tops there for assorted hogs are slight
ly upward of $ 00. Predictions favor
continued moderate marketing re-
ceipts at the western markets now
running 20 per rent below this period
last year.
Sheep and lambs declined 25 to 50
cents last week but there Is some Im-
provement In the situation today prl-
10 to 15 higher run 3000 head.
Some spring lambs brought $$.50 to-
day and yenrllnga $6.25. shorn weth-
ers worth $4.25 to $5.10. ewes $4.00 to
$4.85. Country buyers have taken out
a good many goats for browslnc m.r.
pones lately at $3.25 to $3.60.
