with a two-story fire station in course
of erection; with two beautiful two-
story residences and several cottages
receiving the finishing touches; with
tha plans accepted for two two-story

opera house; with bonds voted for a
new municipal water plant and sew-
rage system; with a ten thousand
dollar bonus raised for a trolley line

To those of our fellow t ltlxcns who
have gone to seek their fortunes in
the far west Tbe Eagle extends to
you an Invitation to come bark home
with the assurance that a warm wel-
come awaits you. It is not too late.
Tnysician ucai inyseir waa a
curreut provert two tbousaud years
ago. and waa aptly quoted on a mem-
orable occasion by tbe founder of the
only true and prospectively universal
religion of mankind. I thought of it
yesterday when I met In the bath
house a prominent physician of my
acquaintance. I had disrobed In a
dressing room and. arrayed in a white
sheet like a ghost was on the way to
tbe hot water tub when 1 heard my
name called. Tbe doctor waa stretch
ed full length on a marble slab under
going the salt massage. He la over
six feet In stature and weighs rather
more than two hundred pounds. After
grasping hla hand ! paused for a
moment to admire bis powerful his
sy metrical physique every line of
which Indicated health and strength
lie was about the last man I should
have supposed to be In need of rem-
edial treatment for any of the Ills
that flesh la heir to and my Impres-
sion at the time was that he waa tak-
ing a bath to gratify a whim or to
add this experience to his stock of
practical knowledge. But later In the
cooling room while we were resting
on contiguous wicker cota bo told me
that he is a victim of rheumatism
and has come to take "the full course."
The doctor's case Is one of many
Illustrations of the truth that appear-
ancess are deceitful. Of the health-
Makers here comparatively few ex
hibit outward slns of suffering. 1 I
have seen some whose appearance
was dlxtresHlngly pitiable. The worst
I have seen Is a handsome young man
with refined features whose hands
are so swollen with Inflanmtory rheu-
matism that the fingers are antruL
Those on crutches are of both sexes
and number perhaps a dozen; some
use walking canes and others limp
more or less painfully. Sometimes iu
conversation or In a game of don.J-
nocs or cards a healthy looking man
or woman will suddenly catch the
breath convulsively while a hi namod-
ic contraction of the mu-clci tells
more plainly than words could of the
Internal agony.
It Is creditable to humanity that
one rarely hears compiling. It Is
not uncommon for men and women
to Jet while writhing r;th ps'n. Ex
cept In response to inquiries one rare-
ly hears another mention his trouble.
I have never before seen at a similar
place so much genul'te hearty good-
fellowship. If anyone evi;is lit lined
to be despondent and to mine Ms af
fllctlons in solitude some good ma-
rltan usually a woman or more fre-
quently several such v 111 satin r
around the sufferer and beguile him
with cheerful conversation and if
they fall to bring "renpite ani nep
enthe" they at least soothe his pain
with mild and healinn tympnUiy. In

COTTON PICKERS IN DEMAND.
Tbe streets were crowded early tbla
morning with wagons from all parts
ot the county but more particularly
from tbe Braaoa bottom after cotton
pickers. In addition to these many
loads went out yesterday and the old
town Is almost deimpulatcd so far aa
the colored contingent la concerned.
The whistle of the gins In the early
morning and the rumble of the cotton
pickers wagona made things seem
like old times. No doubt a great deal
of cotton will come la this week and
cotton picking money will make basi-
nets good next Saturday.
