Following Is a summary of the
monthly cotton crop report Issued by
the New Orleans Tlmea-Deroocrat In
Ita Issue of Monday 8ept. 6'b. The
report is exhaustive and complete
covered by kindreds of correspondent
at every important point. In all the cot-
ton growing states:
1. Sharp deterioration baa been the
rule and the loss ha In many dis-
tricts amounted to a disaster.
2. Excessively high temperatures
and parc&lng winds have forced the
bolls to open prematurely and caused
th? plant to shed.
3. There are complaints of damage
by boll-Weevils In some sections but
the abnormal heat has of course min
imised the ravages of all insects.
4. Picking will soon be gcmr;J.
Most farniera sent Inclined to sell at
current prices though there Is a desire
to hold at least a part of the crop for
an advance.
Report From Bryan.
Following la the reort from Brazos
county sent by the Times-Democrat
correspondent at Bryan:
Bryan Texas. Sept. 1. There has
been but little change In the cotton
crop of Brazos county and this sec-
tion during the past month for the
reason the crop was ruined by the
drouth a month ago and It was then
In such condition that there was little
chance for it to put on any more bolls.
However there was a good rain three
weeks ago. which gave promise of
starting (be cotton to growing again
and making some top crop but It was
followed by a week of the hottest
weather Texas ever knew. The ther
mometer reached 117 In th shado and
the result of the week's beat was that
the cotton was completely burned up
and all hope of any further fruiting
was entirely gone. There have been
Uwo or three light showers since the
good rain of three weeks ago but as
a general thing the weather has been
fair and very hot.
There Is no damage from boll-weevil
on the hills as the cotton is all oen
and no squares are forming. There
may be some small damage In the bot
toms but the cotton there is also near
ly all open One large planter In the
Brazos bottom In order to get hU cot
ton out before the rains set In. has tin
ported Mexican cotton plckera by the
carload from San Antonio and now
hns about 35( pickers at work.
There Is no disposition on the part
of the farmers Jo hold. They seem to
be satisfied with present prices which
are slightly above 13 cents or If not
satisfied they are afral.l to take chart
ces on Its declining and are selling an
rast as they get It out and ginned.
' The crop will be shorter than last
year and It Is still the opinion of
those In a position to know that the
city of Bryan will not receive more
than 13.000 bale-. Last year the re-
ceipts were 20.000. In 1907 th re-
ceipts were only 13.000. while In 1906
they were 40000.
