oped today because of his speech last
night at the banquet of the Periodical
Publishers' Association. The senator
began his speech about midnight talk

cerity of the newspapers of the United
States.
Don. It. Seitz president of the
American Newspaper Publishers' Asso
ciation who was toastmaster at the
end of Senator LaFollette's speech
said: "I shall not attempt to come
to the defense of the newspapers of
the country which have Just been
foolishly wickedly and untruthfully
attacked."
Today Mr. Seltz in an interview said
Senator LaFollette tried to "curry
favor" with the magazine publishers
at the expense of the "infamous slan
der of newspapers" and that Senator
LaFollette "simply wiped himself off
the map."

Henry of the house rules committee
today offered an amendment changing
the rules to prevent the republicans
from tying up the democratic house
through manipulation of the - "dis
charge calendar" feature.

ruies amendment was adopted by a
vote of 150 to 100. Mr. Henry also
introduced a compromise resolution on
his money trust investigation permit
ting four members of the regular
finance committee to become members

"ETPaso Texas Feb. 3. The first
Mexican Central trains since the be-
ginning of the riots arrived this morn-
ing but they brought no Chihuiahua
troops. The latter were detrained last
night returning to Chihuahua where
it Is reported they are much needed.
Americans are still forbidden to cross
into Juarez even on military passes.

There were two new meningitis
cases and one death reported by City
Health Officer Sims since noon yester-
day. Both were negroes.

day and died last night.

FILIPINOS ARE DIVIDED
Manila P. I. Feb. 3. An exciting
time is anticipated when the insular
convention meets here Monday to se-
lect delegates to represent the islands
in the republican national convention
at Chicago. In this city the primaries
were overwhelmingly in favor of Pres-
ident Taft but in some of the prov-
inces the delegates to Monday's con-
vention have been Instructed to vote
against the endorsement of the presi-
dent. It is understood that the admirers
of Colonel Roosevelt will attempt to
secure his endorsement by the con
vention.
GREAT WELCOME FOR
KING AND QUEEN
London Feb. 3. King George and
Queen Mary will be given a great pop-
ular reception upon their arrival from
India plans for the affair having been
completed today. On Monday a great
naval review is to be held at Siiithead
and when the royal party reaches Lon-
don the public is prepared to accord
their majesties an enthusiastic greet-
ing. A thanksgiving service for the
safe return of the king and queen will
be held at St Paul's cathedral.
MEETING AT EDGE

A large and very attentive audience
awaited the speakers at Edge last
evening and they were rewarded by
good talks on the bond issue by the
following- gentlemen: A. G. Board
county judge of Brazos county; J. B.
Priddy and Roy Hudspeth county
commissioners favoring the proposi
tion and Attorney J. G. MInkert a
strong opponent of the proposed bond
issue for good roads in this county.
Sentiment is considerably divided
at Edge regarding the good roada
question but it is conceded that those
in favor of the proposed bond Issue

are gaining ground.
GOOD ROADS MEETING
TO BE HELD AT KURTEN.
At Kurten Monday night there will
be held a very interesting good roads
meeting. Both sides of the question
will be discussed by able speakers.'

Hopkins University) has arrived to
succeed Dr. R. H. Pond at the A. & M.
College as plant pathologist and phys-
iologist. He comes from Salem Va
where be was professor of biology and
geology in Roanoke College. The doc-
tor's wife and daughter are with him
and they are at present guests of the
Hotel Bryan.
