New Haven England March 16.
The Peninsular and . Oriental liner
Oceana was sunk off Beachy Head In
the English channel this morning In
collision with the German bark Pisa-
gua. The Oceana carried forty-one
passengers. The Impact tore out the
Biue or me uceana. Tne passengers
I were ' asleep In their berths at the
time.' The water rushed in so quickly
that passengers waded waist deep In
water on the lower decks In getting
out. The Oceana carried $3000000 in
bullion. It Is believed most all lives
were saved.
( Some of the passengers including a
number of women reached the shore
In life boats clad only in their night
dresses and pajamas and covered with
'dressing gowns and overcoats. The
women were mostly in a state of col-
lapse. Some had no stockings or
shoes and two or three had fallen into
the water.
! The collision occurred about 4
o'clock this morning. The weather
was clear but a big swell was run-
ning which was already washing over
the liner's bows when the passengers
marched on deck.
I The crew consisted of 280 only 32
of whom were white the others being
Lascars. The panic-stricken attempted
to leap into the first boats lowered
upsetting them.
It is known that most of he pas
sengers were saved but It is believed j

crew were drowned. A passing steamer
rescued some.
The bark made port in a sinking
condition.

formed the state department today
that be had received an anonymous
letter warning all Americans to leave
that vicinity before 4 o'clock this aft
ernoon. Consul Miller notified the lv

proper precautions.

of Frank Newshaw whom he killed
here in 1909. The unwritten law was
his defense. The testimony showed

Aldana chief of staff of Pancho VIITa
of the federal army was executed at
sunrise today by order of General
Orozoco. Major Aldana was taken
prisoner In a fight yesterday between
Villa's troops and rebels. Previouslv
Major Aldana had sent word to Gen-
eral Orozoco he would execute him If
he (Orozoco) was captured.
FALL RIVER IN THROES
OF TEXTILE TROUBLES.

000 operatives refuses to accept the
5 per cent wage increase offered by
