Guests Barely Saved Their Lives by
Fleeing In Night Clothes .

St. Augustine Fla. April 2. Winter
resortera barely saved their lives
when five tourists hotels were de-
stroyed by fire here today. The guests
escaped in their night clothes and
there was no time to save even their
personal belongings. The Florida
House Munson House and Nanett Ho-
tel the court house and several Resi-
dences were all destroyed. The loss
Is half a million dollars
is half a million dollars. Two persons
were fatally Injured one of them be-
ing a woman who broke her neck fall-
ing from the third floor of a private
residence. Dozens of hotel guests
were carried down ladders. The fire
covered two blocks on the water front.
The militia Is guarding to prevent
looting.

Dallas Tex. April 2. The Fort
Worth constructive convention prob-
ably will be called off according to
antl leaders here. The action of
Bryan T. Barry chairman of the State
committee which catled the . conven-
tion who last night withdrew from
the committee saying a majority of
Its members were opposed to the Fort
Worth convention. Is considered as
killing the possibility of the conven-
tion. Barry said today he did not In-
tend to call off the convention but
merely resigned. He said the other
members were free to hold it If they
wished. Senator Q. U. Watson said
he and other prominent antls will con-
sider the Fort Worth meeting merely
as a rump convention If held after Bar-
ry's announcement. Senator Watson
asserted South Texas had tacitly
agreed to support Ferguson for Governor.

SL John's Newfoundland April 2.
The steamer Newfoundland brought to
port today the story of the disaster
to the sealing steamer Southern Cross
and her crew of 170 men. It is be-
lieved practically the entire crew per-
ished after the ice floes crushed the
steamer which quickly sank. The
j Newfoundland picked up fifty men the
greater number being already dead
land others dying. Their suffering was
indescribable. . They . escaped to the
Ice when the steamer sank. For two
days they were adrift on Ice floes with
a blizzard raging. The survivors
could tell but little of the disatser ex.
cept the ice crushed the ship like card-
board. They barely had time to escape
over the sides. Rescue ships went to
the scene today to seek for other sur-
vivors or bodies.

Athens Ga. April 2. Express Mes-
senger R. C. Fletcher fought off a train
robber who boarded the Seaboard Air
Line passenger train at a water tank
near Comer Ga. The first Fletcher
knew the bandit had covered him with
a pistol ordering him to open the safe.
Fletcher drew his own pistol and had
a duel with the bandit who was
wounded in the arm. He dropped his
pistol and Jumped from the train
making his escape.

in Arranging Meeting at
Fort Worth.
Dallas Tex April 2. Bryan T. Bar-
ry of Dallas chairman of the commit-
tee appointed to arrange for holding
the convention of "constructive"
Democrats in Fort Worth last night
resigned from his position as chairman
of this committee and gave notice
that he will proceed no further in con-
nection with the Fort Worth meeting.
Mr. Barry's formal statement of
withdrawal from the convention was
given out after a lengthy conference
with Senator Quintus U. Watson of
Glddlngs. Senator Watson declined to
discuss the matter further than to say
that he thought "Mr. Barry's state-
ment tells enough don't it?"

ocrats of Texas: Believing that the
present situation challenged the wis-
dom of holding the State convention
called for Fort Worth on the 14th insL
to select a Democratic candidate tor
Governor for the July primary elec-
tion I wired each member of the 9tlte
committee today asking if he favored
holding the' Fort Worth convention
and have replies from all the acting
committeemen except three and the
majority having answered to tuo nega-
tive and as I concur in this decision
I hereby give notice that I shallliot
proceed further as chairman of the
committee toward holding the conven-
