A STRONG LETTER IN FAVOR Of
DIVORCEMENT.
Mr. Henry M. Rollins.
Gulfiiort. Mississippi
Dear Mr. Rollins: Referring to
your letter of May 19th. and your tel-
egram ot th lth. and my reply
thereto 1 bav plead guttty to tardi-
ness In replying ta your letter due
to having Just moved Into a new
home. In addition to official duties.
As stated In my reply to your tele
gram ot May 18th I believe th best
Interests of higher general and tech-
nical education In Texas will result
from a comutete separation ot the
University and the Agricultural and
Mechanical College Tb State Is
young and both of these Institutions
sr but In the real beginning of their
usefulness. Also the Stst Is large
and th educational fields to b cov
ered by these Institutions hav scar
cely been cleared and opened for de-
velopment. For a very short time a
tingle Institution combining th use-
ful work ot both might make a more
Impressive showing but for th ulti-
mate good of th State I do not be-
lieve It. A on ot th early bene-
ficiaries ot th Stat through th op-
portunities offered by th University
for a more advanced education than
would otherwise hav been possible
1 have watched the progresa of this
effect ot th Rice Institute upon the
patronage of th Agricultural and
Mechanical College or other Institu-
tions In th Stat working towards
higher education. On th contrary I
seems to me thst the Rlc Institute
should hav a beneficial Influence
upon all our blgher grade educational
Institutions. In that It It setting a
standard ot entrance and graduation
requirements towards which all who
ar Interested In thorough efficient
wholesome higher education are Inter-
estedly looking forward.
I appreciate your compliment In
asking for my opinion regarding the
movement to separate the University
and th College and your own In
tens Interest In the matter.
8incererly yours
