really astounding and no doubt Is
causing consternation in the Repub-

Jumping on President Wilson for ap-
proving the Rivers and Harbors bill
as recently passed and referring to
the measifre as "pork barrel states-

IN DEFENSE OF A. AND M.
Somehow we cannot imarine the
... . I l mat
on foot a movement for a West Texas
A. and M. College. The state is not
doing all it can and should do for the
Institution in Brazos county. Federal
aid helps largely to maintain that
school and federal aid can hardly be
enlisted In behalf of a West Texas A.
and M. plant' It is in order to take
adequate care of the school we have
before diverting public money for a
branch institution that' can never
rival the institution at College Sta-
tion. Taxes are likely to be ' high
enough' without indulgence in exploits
of such doubtful wisdom. We do not
demur to taxation when Justified by
results but we fear that in this pro
posed venture there would be taxa
tion without the results that ought to
ensue. Waco Semi-Weekly Tribune.
With the Extension department or ne troubleshould be corrected at
the A. and M. College headed by Col. once' and to The Eagle there appears

tlon of work begun under a Republi
can administration. That while In
truth it was largely a pork barrel at
the same time nine dollars out of
every ten were dumped Into it by the
Republicans. The News concludes by
saying that if President Wilson had
vetoed the bill Candidate Hughes
would now be lambasting him for
wasting the vast expenditures here
tofore made In a mass ot unfinished
work. Tine Republican campaign
committee would do well to take Mr.
Hughes off the stump and let some
of their spellbinders do the speaking.

The filling of the big branch on
Bryan street was of course a big im-
provement but at the same time the
street proper has been very greatly
damaged If it is to be permitted to
remain in its present condition. After
Bryan street was graveled by the I. ft
0. N. railroad it was one ot the very
best in the city and was absolutely
free from mud. It could be crossed
anywhere at street crossings or any-
where else; perfectly dry shod no
matter1 low hard or how long it
rained. In the recent filling how
ever the material was consUntly
dropped from the passing cars and
now the entire street Is covered with
about two inches of mean nasty
sticky clay. The street is really in
worse condition than it was originally
so far as pedestrians are concerned.

Mr. E. B. Lomax is beautifying his
home at the corner of College and'
Burleson streets by the use of con-
crete. He Is having a nice driveway
made for his car and the sidewalks
are being repaired and made new. He
Is also having curbs and gutters put
all around his lot. If you don"t think
concrete will help the looks of things
just stroll over this way and tee Mr.
Lomax' place.
A very noticeable thing to which

A good Joke is told on our friend.
Mr. A. M. Waldrop. While In Waco
visiting relatives a few weeks since
he was Invited out to the regular
weekly luncheon of the Rotary Club.
It is an established rule of the club
for some firm whose head is a mem-
ber to give a prlie each week. Every
man present draws for the prize and
on Mr. Waldrop'a visit he waa the
lucky man but waa given a very cold
deal The prlie was a "thousand
pounds of Ico." given by an Ice com-
pany In that city. Mr. Waldrop told
the Rotary Club In his speech of ae.
ceptanre that ho had gotten a co'j
deal several times In his life but
this war the limit.
