CHURCH TO OBSERVE
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
Directing arrangements for the
one hundredth anniversary celebra-
tion of Old North Church, five miles
north of Nacogdoches, is Rev. A. T.
Garrard, pa3tcr of t^e church. The
centennial celebration will be held
Sunday, May 1, and is expected t
attract persons from all over Texas
and Louisiana.
Thirty-four years an active Bap-
tist minister in Nacogdoches Coun-
ty, Mr. Garrard preached his first
sermon in Old North Church on
Christmas Day, 1904. Since that day
he estimates he has conducted 2000
funerals, delivered 6000 sermons and
pronounced wedding vows for 2500
couples. Among the marriages are
included the marriage of Mr. and
Mrs. Alvin Pryor of Rusk and also
the marriage of their daughter, Flo-
rence to Miles Humphus.
Despite his 6? years of age he still
is pastor of rural churches and
operates a arpiOl truck i.nn-.
History relcteji that Old North
Church was founded May 6, 1838, by
Elder Isaac Reed. Within a few feet
of the building is a giant oak under
which the first sermon was preach-
ed, The oak was stripped of its
tranches by a storm eight years ago,
but survived and is now growing
anew. The Texas Centennial Com-
mission erected a granite marker
under the tree in 1936.
Rev. Garrad is a former Rusk Col-
lege student.
Heaven is not. reached in a single
bound; But we build the ladder by
which we rise from the lowly earth
to the vaulted skies, and we mount
to its summit round by round—Jacob
