Reflections From
The Farmstead
By W. O. Finch
Indpendent family life on the farm
is t he greatest of all luxuries when
capital investment is adequate and
where the farm unit is large enough
to economically justify machinery
and livestock.
Having no boss, managing one's
own business and having no public to
please are always signpostj the
avenue of time which every liberty-
loving independent1 soul looks and
longs for. Such a situation is seldom
seen around here though, for there
are many uncharted byway'3 down
the way of earning a living.
Three hundred acres of land two
hundred of it in expertly developed
pasture and a hundred for tractor
cultivation to feed crop-i would com-
pose such a family size unit in East
Texas. Fifty stocker beef cows, fifty,
sheep and 3 brood sows and two
mares and fifty hens with the off-
spring fed out for market would
bring an independent family income
and balance the activity continuously
over the year and would make one
of the finest and most interesting
independent little business institu-
tions anyone could have. Balancing
the ledgers of income against the
journals of outgoing expense would
be fancy diversion for the general
manager of such a rare rural insti-
tution and the Balance Sheet would
provide the choicest of reading and
look about like this: Income—45 far
calves $1350, 25 top hogs $375, 50
fat lambs, $200, 150 lbs. wool $40,
50 dozen eggs $75, 2 .colts $150, To-
tal income — $2190.
Expenses: Farm operating $520,
food and clothing $350, Taxes and in-
surance and miscellaneous $250, To-
tal expense, $1120, net income $1070.
This table of income and expenses
represent estimated cash income
from products sold after food and
feed requirements of the home had
been met and the expenses only re-
present necessary purchases for the
farm and home of products needed
which cannot be produced. The bal-
ance of $1070 after expenses are paid
would provide a satisfactory sum for
the finer things of life after setting
aside a little savings account each
year.
This family farm institution could
be capitalized for about $10,000, and
is the swellest thing our imagination
can conceive. There are thousands of
such farm institutions throughout
the United States north of here, and
East Texas is headed in that direc-
tion and we are bound to see a lot
of them here later on.
