Fats For Kitchen
May Sink Battleship
Waste fat homemakers save in
their kitchens for the nation's sal-
vage campaign may one day sink an
pnemy battleship or help crumble
axis fortifications on fronts the
world over.
Grease makes glycerine, and gly-
cerine makes gunpowder, explains
.Louise Bryant, specialist in home
management for the A. and M. Col-
lege Extension Service. She explains
that every 10 pounds of fat saved in
the nation's campaign will produce
one pound of glycerine for gunpowd-
er or other explosives needed in win-
ning the war. The two billion pounds
of fat wasted in American kitchens
•every year would provide Wo hun-
dred million pounds of glycerine
. Uncle Sam badly needs, according to
the Bureau of Home Economics.
Recently the War Production Board
arranged with meat dealers to re-
«eive some of this waste fat from
housewives, and the A. and M. Exten-
sion Service will cooperate with state
And county salvage committees in
helping every rural family in Texas
know its part. Cooperation in the na-
tional fat-saving campaign is in line
with the war-time Extension pro-
gram —the Victory Demonstration—'
to which thousands of rural Texans
are pledged.
The homemakers' part in the cam-
paign is to use grease wisely in
cooking and take her surplus fats to
her nearest meat dealer or freezer
locker plant. She'll receive money—
probably five cents per pound. Fat
should be strained and poured into
clean, wide-mouthed cans, such as
a. coffee can. 'Keep the fat in the
refrigerator or some other dark, cool

Using fat drippings in preparing
food will help in the movement, since
■
it will prevent drawing on commer-
cial stocks of fats and oils. Every ta-
blespoon used means buying less fat.
Some homemakers have mistaken-
ly feared a soap shortage would make
it necessary to save their fats for
making soap at home. But soap is a
by-product of glycerine, Miss Bryant
explains, so large supplies will be
available.

in Metro-'Goldwyn-Wayer's "This

Love spats and various family com-
plications furnish abundant hilarity,
with Ann Rutherford and Robert
Sterling as the young couple about
whose woes the laughs center.
The story opens after the honey-
moon. The first spat i occurs when
Sterling fails to notice Ann's new
hat. There are more complications
when papa-in-law makes the bride-
groom his businss partner. Well-in-
tentioned in-laws add to the turmoil,
and the bride's younger sister precip-
itates more laughter when she tries
to glamorize her pigtails and vamp
another sister's beau.
