THE RUSK CHETROKEEAN THURSDAY, JULY 23, 1042
Summer Trouble
In Turkeys
Blackhead is one of the serious
problems confronting turkey grow-
ers, with poults of one to three or
four months oM most affected, says
W. A. 'Boney, Jr., poultry veterinar-
ian of the Texas A. and M. College
Extension Service. The source of the
disease is a one-cell organism which
is taken into the body in the cecal
■worm egg picked up from contam-
inated soil or food.
The principal symptoms are droop-
ing and decline in feeding and the
death rate soon becomes very high
if preventive measures are not adopt-
ed. There is no practical treatment
available, Dr. Boney says, but regu-
lar worming with phenothiazine or
tobacco dust has proved beneficial as
a preventive.
Phenothiazine powder is given on
the basis of one pound to 1,000 birds.
It i* easily moixed by placing one
pound of the drug in 60 pounds of
mash and feeding fix pounds of the
mixture fo each J00 birds for two
days. Tobacco dust at the rate of
two to four per cent easily is given
for one to tWP weeks, If possible,
■move the bill!; to clean ground and
isolate the sick.
j Another disfease, trichomoniasis,
closely resembles blackhead. It also
is caused by a one-cel'l organism pick-
ed up directly from soil, water, lit-
ter and feed and affects all age3. Dr.
Boney says he has observed more of
it this year than any other disease,
and losses have been lar^e. The birds
show generalized weakness & drOop-
iness when attacked, along with wat-
ery, foamy, whitish diai-rhea. Treat-
ment, he adds, is strictly a problem
of sanitation. By administering a
mixture of two ounces of copper sul-
phate (Milestone) in one pint of vine-
gar, and moving the birds if possible
good results can be expected. The
mixture should be given in quanti-
ties of one tablespoonful to each gal-
lon of drinkng water in a non-met-
al container for four or five days.
Texas ranks sixth among the
states in production of lumber.

TO THE PEOPLE
OF CHEROKEE COUNTY:
I wish to take this means of thank-
ing the friends who have aided and
encouraged me in my campaign for
County Treasurer. Having no car and
due to the rubber shotage I have not
due to the rubber shortage I have not
been able to see all voters although
I sincerely wished to do so.
If I were young enough to serve
our National Government in the war
effort I would not ask for County of-
fice. One of my sons is in Alaska,
seeing hard and dangerous service
defending our country and my other
sons, will go when called. I cannot
serve our Government in any capac-
ity because of my age but I can serve
as your County Treasurer as well as
a younger person.
If the voters see fit to let me fill
the County Treasurers office, I will
be very grateful and will render
faithful service to the people of my
County |
Gratefully yours,
CORA M. DICKEY

Candidate Butler has the unusua.
hobby of giving away lucky birth-
date silver dollars to candidates tor
public office, and others. You will
see him carrying around a sack ol
iron men ... if he asks you your
age, tell him, and he'll give you a
cartwheel with your birth date on
it . . he's got to do the asking
however!
The above is the picture of the youthful red-headed
former governor of Texas, who is now a candidate for
United States Senator. In these times it will be fortunate
for Texas to have as her junior senator a man against
whose integrity and high character suspicion has never
pointed.
Dan Moody's record while in office both as Attorney
General and Governor was without blemish and the peo-
ple of Texas, with him in the Senate, will be assured of
vigorous and able and intelligent representation. Texas is
fortunate that she has Dan Mooiy at this time.

Of course freedom is expensive. The highest
price lags are always attached to the most
precious items. And the cost of human liberty
in blood and treasure is a staggering one. But
to be able to speak and pray and think and vote
the way we wish—did you ever hear anyone
question the cost?
Some Americans are paying the cost with their
lives. Others are buying as many Defense
Stamps and Bonds as they possibly can—every
day. Are you doing your share?
Rusk and surrounding community have lagged in the purchase of war bonds in Cherokee coun-
ty. Let's no longer be guilty of being at the bottom of the list. It is going to take the united
efforts of us all, and half-way efforts will not get the job done. Buy all you can, and buy today
