I ve $>t three
reasons for that
W
check! wrote today
Lhkeb blue stars in my window. Three
sons—mine—in the service.
"When you've got a flag like that in your
window, mister, you knew why you write
out your check... quick... when ytmr own
community's war fund and the National War
Fund make their joint appeal for your help.
"I guess I've done my share during my
life to help out folks who just weren't as
lucky as I was. Call it 'charity' or anything
else you want. I just call it having a heart
under your vest. But...I'm wandering...
"What I want to say is that I didn't have
to think beyond that service flag to dig down
deep and dig down quick.
"Because I want to send food and medi-
yCine and clothes and anything else that's
needed to the Russians, Yugoslavs, Chinese,
and every other one of our fighting allies.
"Why? Not just because I've got a heart
under ay vest. But because I want to J**p
(bom fighting/ They're my sons' allies. The
harder and longer they fight the sooner this
war, will be over—the sooner my sons will
anir back so their mother and me.
"I also want some of my dollars to hel
give my boys what the U S O calls a 'home
away from home! A swell show to entertain
them —in Africa, Australia, or here in a
camp at home. A cup of hot coffee, a ciga-
rette, a dance with a decent, pretty girl...all
the things, big and little, that keep up mv
boys' morale. And the U S O is one of the
Agencies in the National War Fund.
"Yes, and I want things taken care of here
at home, too. The wives and children and
mothers of men in service. Kids whose
mothers are working in factories—and help-
ing to win the production battle. All rh<:
local folks who need help—war or peace.
"And last, but far from least, it's swell to
be able to give once, and know that all the
different beneficiaries of your dollars will
be helped in the best and quickest way. I fig-
ured what I'd give to our own community's
fund and to each of the agencies on the Na-
tional War Fund list, added the total, and
doubled it!
"Because...well, you see / have thru rea-
sons. But don't blame me if I venture to hope
that you'll do the same" "
