ROOKIE FIREMAN HAD
A YEN FOR HIS WORK
HOUSTON — A 17-year-old re-
cruit recently joined the volunteer
fire department in Spring Branch
a suburb of this city. He learned
that the first man to report at
the fire station when an alarm
sounded got the privilege of driv-
ing the truck to the scene of the
fire. So he started a couple of
fires himself, and beat the oth-
er firemen to the station. Finally
police suspected him and he ad-
mitted his enthusiasm for driving
the fire truck had inspired him
to start the fires.
