MVC SCHEDULE
North Texas at Memphis State
Wichita State State at Colorado State
Tulsa at Arkansas
By BOB ANDERSON
Chat Sports Editor
If football schedules followed the same
plot as a good mystery story, the climax
wouldn't come so early.
Such is not the case, however, and the
Eagles invade Memphis Saturday as the
two Missouri Valley Conference pre-sea-
son favorites clash head-on in the second
game of the season for both teams.
The Tigers are favored to repeat as
MVC champs, but by only the slimmest of
margins. Coach Rod Rust's Eagles are
primed and ready for the crucial contest
which begins at 7:30 p.m. in Memphis
Memorial Stadium.
"We always try to play them one at a
time, but our players should be especially
ready for this one," Rust said last week
Two of the three Eagle losses in Rust's
two-vear tenure have been to the Tigers.
29-20 in 1967 and 30-12 last year. The other
loss came last season 117-15 > to Southwest
Conference co-champion Arkansas.
Memphis State opened the season with
a 28-3 setback at the hands of Mississippi.
The Tigers set up three Ole Miss touch-
downs with two fumbles and an inter-
ception.
The Eagles handled out-manned South-
western Louisiana 40-6 as quarterback
Steve Ramsey bombed the Bulldogs with
five touchdown passes and 495 yards in
the air.
However, the Eagles accumulated
only 55 yards rushing, causing some con-
cern. "We will get the running game in
better shape in a hurry," Rust said.
North Texas also had fumble trouble,
losing four of five. "The poor running and
the fumbles were our big concerns this
week," Rust said.
SMU Hosts NT
In Cross Country
North Texas State opens the fall cross
country season this afternoon in Dallas
agaiostSMU.
Leading the Eagle runners will be
senior Jove Gomez of Skidmore who has a
4:12.4 mile and a 15:12.4 three-mile to his
credit.
Other squad members are seniors
Jessie Cavasoz (Duncanville) and Doug
Walker (Carrollton), juniors Roger Rod-
riquez (San Antonio) and Dennis Stephens
(Breckenridge), sophomore Tom Hess
(Muenster) and freshman Jim Lintner
(Richardson). Joe Barry (Pittsburg, Pa.)
is returning to North Texas after a hitch
in the service.
Mistakes Hurt NT
Navarro Downs Eaglets, 7-6
A fumbled snap from center on an ex-
tra point meant the difference between a
tie and a loss for the North Texas Eag-
lets in their season opener here Thurs-
day night as the Navarro Junior College
Bulldog' edged NT 7-6.
The Eaglets spotted the visitors a sec-
ond-quarter touchdown before getting on
the scoreboard with 3:12 left in the
third quarter.
Halfback John O'Grady dove into the
end zone from the one yard line capping
a 39-yard drive, and the mis3ed snap
caused the extra point attempt to go
wide, leaving the score 7-6.
After a scoreless first quarter, Navar-
ro had moved the ball 72 yards in only
six plays to go ahead. Quarterback Gabe
Padilla went the final eight yards around
left end for the score. Ronnie Partridge
bocted the extra point for the victory
margin.
THE KEY PLAY in the drive came on
third down and 14 at the NT 41. A pass
frcm Pa iilla to Eddie Dunaway fell in-
complete, l/Ut the Eaglets drew a penal-
ty for pass interference setting the Bull-
dogs up on the North Texas eight yard
line. Padilla scored two plays later.
Navarro kept the Eaglets pinned in
their own end of the field most of the
second half. NT was able to penetrate the
Bulldog 30 yard line only once other than
the lone Eaglet score.
North Texas led in total offense 289
to 258 yards. Eaglet quarterback Tommy
Nelson had trouble finding his receivers
and finished with 11 of 25 passes for
106 yards with four interceptions.
O'Grady took rushing honors for the
night with 99 yards on 25 carries. Full-
back James Nunn paced Navarro with
49 yards on 11 carries.
"WE JUST DIDN'T make the big
plays," Eaglet Coach Gary Ness said.
"O'Grady did a real fine job, and (Eddie)
Washington made some big plays in the
second half." Washington played only
in the second half and picked up 45 yards.
Navarro Coach A1 Carmichael was
pleased with the win, the Bulldogs first
in three outings. "Actually we were
lucky. This was their (North Texas')
first game and they are going to be a
real good ball club when they settle
down," Carmichael said.

The Mean Green defense threw the
Bulldogs for a total of minus 32 yards on
the ground. "Defensively, we penetrated
okay but didn't get the quarterback on the
ground every time we got to him," Rust
noted.
Ramsey attempted a school record of
52 passes and the Bulldog rush got to him
only once for a 12-vard loss.
"He had too long to throw-that could
spoil us," Rust said. "He won't get that
much time this week," he added, showing
respect for the Memphis Stale defense.
Ramsey's Saturday performance
jumped him from 32nd to a tie for 14th in
national career passing statistics based
on completions.
