West Texas State Enters MVC
West Texas State University was offi-
cially accepted into the Missouri Valley
Conference Saturday under an expansion
program in which three more schools are
to be added.
The Canyon school had been seeking
admittance to the conference since recently
improving its sports facilities. The MVC
also has been seeking schools which would
upgrade its football program.
North Texas Athletic Director Rod Rust
was enthusiastic about the entry of WTSU.
"I feel it will be great." he said.
Joe Kerbel, WTSU athletic director,
said, "The past record of the MVC has
been illustrious, but the expansion plan
and the enthusiasm for continued progress
by the entire membership makes the future
of the Missouri Valley one of the more
exciting ventures of the I970's."
Cincinnati, a strong contender in the
MVC, will leave the conference aftef this
season. The Ohio school decided to become
an independent.
The Eagles may not be meeting the
Buffaloes for at least three years, however,
since football schedules have been made
through 1973. West Texas officials hope to
rearrange the schedule and put the
Buffaloes into contention by 1972.
In basketball. North Texas may end up
playing in a split league within the MVC if
proposed changes are made.
DeWitt T. Weaver, commissioner of the
MVC, had proposed an expansion in mem-
bership and a round-robin schedule in
basketball for the conference.
Weaver wants to add more teams to the
nine-school conference to make eight teams
playing football and 12 teams playing
basketball. The 12 basketball teams would
then be divided into two leagues of six each,
with the winners playing each other for the
championship.
Rust stated, "Probably the way it will
be is that you would play each team in your
league twice and each team in the other
league once. This is the most popular
system for the expansion."
At present five teams play both football
and basketball in the conference. Those
Schmidt To Try
For Top Honors
Bill Schmidt, North Texas State javelin
thrower, finished Saturday's NCAA
championship finals in second place. He
goes to the AAU Championship meet at
Bakersfield, Calif., this week for his last try
at a national title.
Bill Skinner of Tennessee, the NCAA
record holder, trailed Schmidt during the
preliminaries, but the 30-year old former
steel worker rallied in the finals to win with
a toss of 270-8. Schmidt's throw of 262-11
nabbed the runnerup position. He also
placed second to Skinner in the USTFF
meet two weeks ago.
Schmidt, a senior at NT, became the
favorite in the javelin event when he scored
a 267-11 in the Thursday qualifying rounds.
"Bui we didn't have another opportunity to
practice until Saturday," Schmidt's coach,
Winton (Pop) Noah said. "1 believe he
might have won the tournament with better
conditions. The event itself was held in sort
of a muddy, pasture-like deal," he said.
Earlier this year, Schmidt injured his
right elbow when he tossed a career best of
280-7 in Modesto, Calif., then reinjured the
arm at the NCAA meet. "It felt like it was
going to fall off," he said after the NCAA
finals.

and West Texas would play in the same
basketball league with one other team, yet
undecided, while Drake, Bradley, St. Louis
and Louisville would play in the other
league with two other teams.
West Texas finished their 1969 football
schedule with a 6-4 record. Before joining
the MVC, they had been an NCAA major
school independent since the Border Con-
ference disbanded in 1962.
Golfers Vie for Win
In NCAA Tournament
Coach Herb Ferrill's golfers are a long
way from home this week. Two Dallas
sophomores and three junior lettermen are
representing the Eagles at Columbus, Ohio,
in the NCAA championship golf tourna-
ment.
The 72-hole tournament started
Wednesday and will run through Saturday
over the Ohio State University Scarlet
Course.
Varsity rookies competing are Bernie
Averett, holder of the first Fred Cobb
Memorial Scholarship, and Ross Collins
Jr., son of a former Eagle player who is a
club pro in Dallas.
The Eagles' leading contender in indi-
vidual play will be Guy Cullins, runnerup
in the recent Texas amateur championship
tournament. Cullins, who played high
school golf in Victoria, is the son of Denton
Country Club pro Austin Cullins.
Two other junior lettermen in the tourney
are Bill Powell of LeMars, Iowa, and
Dennis Walters of Neptune, N.J.
Coach Ferrill said that competition will
be rugged in Columbus because the golfers
are competing with the best schools in the
country. "We think we have a chance to do
as well or better than last year," he said.

Two Eagles To Play
In 37 th All-Star Game
Two former North Texas State players,
wide receiver Ron Shanklin and defensive
lineman Cedric Hardman, will play in the
37th All-Star football game in Chicago
July 31.
The windy city will host the college stars
when they take on the Super Bowl cham-
pion Kansas City Chiefs.
Hardman, San Francisco's first draft
pick, will also play in the F.ast-West game
to be televised from Lubbock. He will be
matched against Bruce Taylor of Boston, a
future San Francisco teammate.
Pop Noah's recruiting is going well.
Twenty-one of an expected 25 track and
field prospects have signed letters of intent
for next season, including shot put champ
Steve Neckar of Sunset High School in
Dallas. Neckar's season best is a throw of
60 feet, 4 inches.
State discus champion Jim Parker has
also signed a letter of intent with North
Texas. Parker's throw of 191 feet won the
Class 4A state discus title H- owns the
nation's second best schoolboy throw of 192
feet.
Coach Noah reportedly may soon sign
state track champions from Maryland and
Georgia.
The North Texas State golf course may
soon shut down completely for repairs.
Construction has already closed the back
nine holes.
The Board of Regents in May approved
the sale of $150 thousand in revenue bonds
for golf course improvements. The contract
for renovation of the course was awarded to
the firm of Don January and Associates on
a bid of $135,850. January, former PGA
champion, is an ex-NT golfer.
In other golfing action, the fifth annual
Denton Country Club Invitational Pro-Am
golf tournament will begin June 28. It will
carry an $8,000 purse and feature big-name
players. Besides Don January, the list of
players includes ex-Masters champion
Jimmy Demaret, Darrell Royal, Mickey
Mantle and Don Meredith.
