part of the driver of a car, and instead of
it being a procuring cause for the accident,
in fact, it should have acted as a distinct
deterrent and placed tjhe driver on the
alert more so than the open highway.
Any time a hazard is created for a
driver by weather conditions, or by curves,
hills and crossings, a man at the steer-
ing wheel wityi ordinary judgment should
take such conditions as reasons for his be-
ing on the alert and exercising more than
ordinary care in seeing that no ac-
cident happens.
When you consider tjhc facts in most
of the accidents, there was a place where
ordinary care exercised would Jiave pre-
vented an accident. Rules of safety must
be observed to insure a cutting down of
car tragedies. Slogans about safety don't
mean anything—it's the everlasting exer-
cise and common sense and ordinary care

Wrecks along the highways of Gray-

WHAT
OTHER EDS
ARE THINKING
THE WORLP KHEAD
In his Chirstmas message,
President Roosevelt made ^no ef-
fort to hide the fact that, for
most of the world, this holiday
season is anything but a hanpy
one. Even thoes nations still at
peace are restive with anxiety for
what may lie ahead. But his mes-
sage was not one of futility. It
pointed to a better and happier
world—one that may be attained
in time if we keep on striving for
it and do not become discouraged.
Desipite the present wars and
the uneven distribution of wealth,
much already has been accomp-
lished towards the aims trt? Presi-
dent upheld. Plagijes and famines
are not the scourges they once
were, and there is still hope for
a more orderly world in which
disputes 'between the nations will
be settled without resort to arms.
This hope has been indulged in

Like A Boom Town
Down at the Union News iHn-
tng room and restaurant the other
evening when the train from
Kansas City came in, the crowd
many times, only to be dashed to
the ground; but today the people
of the Western World seem more
determined than ever to achieve a
world in which national aggression
will have no part.
The main need now is to keep
on striving and to overcome dis-
heartening setbacks. As long as
the will to establish a peaceful
world is unquenched, the human
race can still lay claim to a di-
vine spark that places it above tha
animal kingdom. If the determine
ations for peace becomes strong
enough, persons now living may
see the dny in which the nations
will achieve a world government
and devote their efforts to less
bloody occupations than those
now in the spotlight.—IDallas

asking for food had Manager G.
G. Furlow, stepping around like a
boom or oil town kind was on.
Every available seat at the lunch
counter and all the tables wero
filled witih hungjy folk and peo-
ple were standing around about
ten deep waiting for some one to
get up so they might get a bite to
eat. The girls were shoving food
right and left and the visitors and
traveling public had their eyes
bulged out as if they had struck
a town where prosperity was on
the go. 'One party from Kansas
City next to us remarked "They
seem to be short of hands around
here." We answered "Woman,
its worse than this, the crowds,
most of the time. All the girls are
married and the men are working
on a big dam and the hungry justi
have to wait until they can be
served and they are lucky to be
given anything in this tnwn that is
on the boom so. Why even the
lumber yards have to stay open
all night to take care of the or-
ders for new homes, oil derricks,
dimension timbers for the dam
and lengthening of the railroads."
"I was wrong then in criticizing
the place then, I guess," she said.
"You certainly do have some
town here with all that going on'
and I am glad to know that you
have such a wonderful place."

Miss Lois Bragg, technician at
the Denison CitCy hospital, says
she thinks the line of work she
has chosen as her life work fs one
most pleasant and she enjoys It
and recommends it to girls who
are considering such a step. . . .
Which recalls that a former em-
ployee of the Press, Mrs. Emericlt
Hudek, is taking a couse in prep-
aration for the work of a dietician
for hospital work. . . .And those
nurses out at the Denison City
hospital are most considerate and
patient. . . .We still say that the
intersection of Hull street aud
Crockett avenue makes a danger-
ous situation, when that city bus
makes its stop so elope to the inter
section. Why can't it be changed
by the bus moving up a little
from the corner so that the view
shall not be obscured from two
angles?. . . . This column is prom-
ised an interesting statement
from a party whose words may
be interesting to many readers.
. .And that also reminds us that it
will not be long now until the
turn of the new year and city
politics. Lost year we had a
change in the way of graveyard
quietnAM in the commissioners
race and this year we hear It is
to be an election not without
noise and interesting campaign
matter. . . .Sorry to hear Griffin
Dollahide Is a patient in the Den!'
son City hospital. A fine young
man and was at one time a city
carrier for the Press—his first
adventune into the business world
. . . .We still don't understand
why so many business men get
their printing out of the city when
they hflve as good printers here. .
. . If there Is any man In Denison;
