Why Not a Practice
Blackout Here?
Why not a practice blackout for
Denison at at early date? The fact that
we have located near us important factors
in winning' a wbi in the Denison dam and
the basic flying school, along with an im-
portant factor in the manufacture of food
which is being forwarded in ton lots to
Europe, makes t his a vital sector for an
enemy bomber Our city officials, there-
fore. are wise in planning one for Denison.
It is the idea of observers that Texas.
would prove a Vital spot in ease of in-
vading bomber? in the Western Hemis-
phere, since thoy would likely operate
from the south and thia state would be
its first objective.
At first test blackouts were looked
upon as rather .far-fetched, but there i3
none among us now who looks lightly up-
on sujch a matter, and to be alble to score
the bost results from such a huge task
as securing the cooperation of a whole
community on a blackout, it of necessity
will require a great deal of planring and
netting of the scage, in order to setaure in-
telligent and synchronized cooperation.
That is what wc must have/ if we are to
protect the city in a blackout in case of
real trouble.
00
Now that Ave have the sheriff's de-
partment equipped with two way radio,
and the further fact that Denison and
Sherman are each equipped with police
radio service, why can't the entire equip-
ment for the three divisions be synchro-
j l.ized as to Wiive length? Such a uni-
; fied program would be of immeasurable.
advantage in protection from criminals,
i fires and other matters. Recently a fire
occasioned bv a traffic accident between
this city and Sherman could have been
prevented and a big savings made on tho
cargo, had the two cities radio wave
lengths been the same. With the war on
and synchronized service being so much
in order for efficiency and quick trans-
mission of messages, it would seem that
delay on such a matter is or.ly adding to
our own disadvantage.
oo-
Back something like fifty years or
more ago, according to newspaper stories
of that day, coal, iron ore, and fir.e sand
suitable for glass making were found near
this city. With the synthetic movement
on ar.d the need to use glass as a substi-
tute for tin arid other containers, it may
be the opportune time for some smart
ones to develop the possibility of our
resoui ces.
