Most of us blame nature be-
cause we do not become famous.
We don't bavo the voice or the

are .many singers with far richer
voices than Cantor or Jolson or
Durante—but these three have
personality.As Durante says, "It's

Opportunity is lacking, did
someone say? Irving Berlin began
as a singing waiter. He can scarce

800 songs, many of which have
gladdened millions of hearts, and
will live as long as the hutaanl

I like limeade made with plain,

What is there so peculiar about
wanting limeade made with plain
water? But most people prefer it
with carbonated and, regardless
of my request, that's the way it's
always served to me. If and when
I ever get limeade with plain wa-

Early Age Time To
Immunize Children
Against Diphtheria
All children should be immun-
ized against diphtheria at a very
early age, according to a state-
ment on the subject released this
week by the Texas state depart-
ment of health, explaining that
toxoid, which can be administered
easily and without danger, can
safeguard youngsters against this
serious and killing disease of
childhood.
Dr. Geo. W. Cor, state health
officer, urges all Texas parents to
have their children, who are not
already protected, immunized at
once.
"The administration of toxoid
can save a child from serious ill
ness or even death and those who
have not been safeguaded against
danger should be inoculated im-
mediately," Dr. Cox said.
"Babies should be immunized
by the age of eight or nine
months," Dr. Cox advised. Author-
Stagger Mail For
Christmas To Make
For Service, Urged
Postmaster J. R. Brown has re-
quested public cooperation in
handling the heavy Christmas
mailing load. He asked that peo-
ple begin mailing their Christmas
cards and packages at once, and
that they space out their mailings
over several days so that mail will
arrive at the postoffice in steady
stream, instead of in bunches.
During normal period, cancella-
tions at the post office average
8,000 pieces of mail per day. They
are now averaging 16,000 per day
and during the peak of the Christ-
mas season they reach 25,000 per
day.
"Many people have their Christ-
ities on the care of infants rec-
ommend a first dose by the age
of eight or nine months, and
sometimes as early as six months.
A second dose is usually given
later."
To maintain complete immun-
ity, Dr. Cox said that a reinforc-
ing dose of toxoid is advised when
a child is old enough to enter
school if a Schick test reveals the
need of one. Children who enter
school or kindergarter this year
without this additional safeguard
or without having been immunized
certainly should be protected
without any further delay, the
state health officer declared.

Freeze Fowls Culled
to Save Grain Crop
COLLEGE STATION — With
the emphasis on better manage-
ment of the poultry flock to save
money and grain, there will be a
lot of roosters and poor layers lin-
ed up for the freezer locker this
year.
Roy Snyder, extension poultry
marketing specialist for Texas A.
& M. college, says that home pre-
paration of poultry for the freezei
locker is comparatively easy. The
main thing to remember is that no
time should be lost between the
killing and freezing.
It is very important that the
birds be well-bled. The tempera-
ture of the scalding water should
be 28 deg. P. Pierce the brain, just
as though the bird was going to
be dry-picked. The feathers will
pull a little easier and the skin
will be in better condition for
nias lists almost complete, but are
delaying until they can fill in
just a few missing addresses," the
postmaster said. "It would help us
a great deal if next week these
people would mail all the cards
and gifts they have ready or can
get ready."
Full and correct addresses arc-
essential, and use of zone numbers
helps greatly in sorting the mail
for delivery, he said. Packages
must be wrapped securely with
strong paper and heavy twine, and
it's a good idea to repeat the ad-
dress inside the outer wrappings.
Christmas cards should be tied in
bundles, with all envelopes facing
the same way and the stamps in |
the same corner.
The postmaster asked that all
Christmas cards and packages for
cut-of-state delivery be in the
mails by December 10, and that,
local cards be mailed by December
15 to insure delivery before
Christmas.
storage.
Tie the wings and legs down on
birds for roasting or baking, to
make a more compact package.
If the bird is to be stewed or
fried, cut it ready for the pan. It
more easily done before packag-
ing than after freezing.
Snyder says that good packag-
ing of poultry for the locker is
essential. Many users have found
that sealed cellophane bags or
tight carton are best ways to
preserve quality.
If tho temperature of the freez-
er is maintained at zer > deg. P.,
well-packaged poultry c;in be kept
six to 12 months.
