Harrison. It would be a pleasure to pay this little
homage to each one of the faithful men and women
who have given themselves to this work, but space
forbids, and my memory might be at fault. The records
of the Austin Association show that Mr. J. B.
Hedspeth, Judge John C. Townes, Mr. C. A. Dickson,
Mr. Geo. W. Beaver, Mr. Geo. E. Holiday and Mr.
E. J. Mathews have held the office of Superintendent.
Something like ten years ago the Sunday School was
reorganized according to the graded plan, and the
Southern Baptist Convention Graded Series of Lessons
was adopted. This arrangement is still in operation.
There are the Cradle Roll, Beginners, Primary,
Junior, Intermediate, Senior, and Adult Department,
each with its own officers, and each as a usual thing
conducting its own opening exercises; while all departments
meet together for the closing period. There
are a number of organized classes carrying on very
varied activities in addition to their Bible work.
The number of members in the Sunday School has
never been exceedingly large, the most noticeable
growth having taken place in the last ten years. In
1891 the Association records show an average attendance
of about 200, in 1900, 100; in 1911, 299; while at
the present writing it is about 500.
The Women's Work
As has always been the case, no movement in the
First Baptist Church has ever been carried forward
without the help of the women. During the first
twenty-five years their efforts seem to have been simply
as members of the body, I mean without a special
organization, for there is nothing to indicate a woman's
society until about 1875. At that date I am told
a few women gathered at the home of Mrs. Anderson
Harrell, and organized the Ladies' Aid and Missionary
Societies. I can distinctly remember when my mother
