The next Church to leave the mother organization
was the South Austin Baptist Church, organized October
11, 1891. As in the former case, a Sunday School
had been held there for some time previous to the
church organization. I well remember the day that
a number of us from the old Church went over after
Sunday School to take part in the dedication of the
little new church, set among the trees in beautiful
Fairview Park. Dr. B. H. Carroll, Sr., preached the
sermon, and the audience overflowed the building.
The next offshoot was the Hyde Park Church, organized
in March, 1894, with 28 members.
As a number of the Baptists had for some years been
feeling that some organized denominational work
among the students of the State University was a
growing need, and as they thought such a work must
be conducted in a quarter of the town near the University,
it was decided that the Baptists in that section
should withdraw from the old church and form a
University Baptist Church. This was accomplished in
September, 1908. They bought a little Presbyterian
Church on Nueces Street between Twenty-second and
Twenty-third Streets and worshiped there until the
completion of the splendid edifice which they dedi
cated in 1922.
Although it cannot be said that the Mexican and
Swedish Baptist Church are children of the old
Church, I feel that their growth in Austin has been
watched and fostered by the members of the First
Church to such an extent as to give her some claim
upon them.
The New Church
Before the world was shocked by the outbreak of
the Great War in Europe, and before prices of building
material began to climb to heights unequaled since
the Civil War perhaps, the First Baptist Church decided
that it had outgrown its old quarters and must
