Wings Set
Big Series
CHICAGO (AP)—The Chicago
Black Hawks and Detroit Red
Wings tonight open the final se-
ries of the National Hockey
League Stanley Cup playoffs in
Chicago Stadium—and it will be
quite a family affair.
. James D. Norris. is co-owner
... and chairman of the board of the
Hawks. The Red Wings are owned
. bv his brother. Bruce, and sister.
Margaret Norris Riker. .They are
, "• heirs of the late James Norris,
, , founder of hockey's richest dy-
' nasty. "•
The Hawks, who eliminated the
r, world champion Montreal Cana-
diens in six games with 3-0 back-
to-back victories, have been in-
stalled 13-10 favorites to win the
ppener of the best-of-seven series, j
The Hawks have won the cupj
- twice, in 1934 and 1938. The Red
.Wings have won it seven times,
the last time in 1955:
The Hawks, who finished the
regular seasoh in third, and' the
Red Wings who barely struggled
home in fourth and (hen whipped
the runner-up Toronto Maple
Leafs in five games, will make
up the first all-United Stales
. Stanley Cup showdown sinte De-
• troil defeated New York in 1950.
Victory for the Hawks in the
series—which would bring a 154,-
000 split of the winner's ahre—
would mark the. first time Chi-
cago has had a world champion-
ship in any sport since the Chi-
cago Cardinals (now moved to
St Louis) took the National Foot-
ball League crown in 1947.
After tonight's game, with a ca-
pacity „ crowd vof 1B.666 assured,
the series will shift to Detroit
Saturday, return to Chicago Mon-
day and then back to Detroit for
■' the fourth game Wednesday. If
necessary, the series will continue
at Chicago April 14, at Detroit
April 16 and at Chicago April 18.

No. t—The Backswing
Written for
Newspaper Enterprise Association
The basic idea in most shots, es-j
pecially the drive, is to get the
clubhead in a controlled arc so- it j
will strike the ball as It reaches!
maximum speed.
For the purpose of instruction
the swing can be broken down into
three phases — the backswin
downswing and follow through. 1
use all three phases should be co-
ordinated into one flowing motion.
Grip the club properly and stand
with the clubhead just behind the
ball, with its -face square to the
line of flight. Start the backswing
smooth and low, the hips pivoting
to the right, the weight shifting
automatically to the right foot.
Make it a sweeping movement,
with the left arm straight, but not
rigid.
Keep both elbows close to the
body. Don't bend the wrists until
they have reached the waist line,
Bending them too soon interrupts
the flowing continuity of the swing,
disrupts the unbroken rhythm you
must have for good driving.
Don't let the club dip much be-
low the horizontal at the top of the
swing.
Don't loosen the grip, but let the
hand and fingers maintain control
without tightness or tens e n e s s
throughout, particularly at the top
of the swing.
NEXT: The downswing.
