Horse Breedingin Texas. '
I am especially' pleased with he
beautiful cuts of live stock- and es-
' pecially fine horses that greet us with
the coming of your paper from week
to week. I.am'.a horseman myself in
a modest "way and will give your num-
erous intelligent readers a Jew items o!
yhatr.kno.wabout these.' Year be-
fore last I tobk.eight.car loads of my
Texas stock-of all ages to Illinois and
peddled them.all the way from Ashley
to Shayneetown. .That being a bad
' vear. forhaV and corn in your country
I lost about three thousand dollars. I Mackechney.
sold. good Texas mares as low as $20
1 to $25; 'At. the close.of my sales well
oft in November. I traded but for a
finetbree-quarter blood stallion and
brought him home. Lastr year he
served a goodly number of 'my best
mares and a few of my very smallest.
The colts he has got me. are the won-
der of all who see.them.'and for some
of the best I would not think of taking
less than $75 and I have beenpffered
$25 for-one from fte-sii.aliest mare on
the'lpbxw scarcely 13 hands high
yhlle from the ordinary Texas stallion
"''these colts would not be worth $5.
Now '.I am going to make a predic
tion that from five to ten years from
now that the finest horses in the Uni-
ted States will carry from a fourth to a
half Texas blood in ;his. veins. They
will not be the largest horses .but they
will;be larce enouch for all purposes'
except where the great shire horse is.J
required cross me iexas mare wun
a Cleveland bay a Hambletonian
Morgan or any;other good stock and
you will get an animal of great .endur-
ance high nervous' action beautiful
proportions kind and gentle.as a child
always in good Health clean of limb
good feet the eye of an eagle fleet as
the reindeer and will carrythemselves
TWith lofty pride either in the harness
.or under the saddle. The original
mustang was unaouoteaiy a. true qe-'
scendant of the famous Arabian horse
brought here and to Mexico by the
early invaders from Spain and escap-
ing in battle or otherwise became wild.
. When' I first came to this country forty-two-years
ago the wild horses could
be counted by millions and there never
was a horse that could catch a good
- one or come any way near doing it. I
once rode one of them over eighty
miles with but two stops of fifteen
minutes and made the trip in ten
hours and he was as free to go the
last mile as he was the first. For fol
lowing Indians almost day and night
for days and weeks the United States
officer' tries to get the Texas horses
and if he. gets them he is sure to get
the Indians. Thp Texas mare bred
to a Norman horse will get a large
horse and have good actionas my colts
now six months old abundantly prove
but' IbeKeve bred to a Cleveland bay
riaf igood size there will be a still better
product. W. G Kingslay in Prairie
