A Hundred' Ton Magazine Order.
"An" event in periodically litlerature
hot without its significance to the gen-
eral public as showing the growth of the
reading classes was- the receipt on the
9th of November by The Cosmopoli-
tan Magazine ofthe order given below.
A single order from a news company
fordne hundred tons of magazine! Thai
is almost an event in the. history of the
world. A like otder has never before
been made and if past rations be
maintained it means considerably more
than half a million circulat'o i for the
December Cosmopolitan. Yes when
the list of authors and artists in the
December number is examinined one
is not surprised. It contains the only
known unpublished manuscript of De
Maupassant illustrated by Vierge per
haps the most famous of European il-
lustrators; After the World's fair by
Paul Bonrget John J. Imjals William
Dean Howels. Lyman J. Gage Arthur
Sherborn Hardy Mark Twain Robert
Grant and others nearly as famous and
nearly two hundred illustrators to which
the following artist contribute: Hop j
kinson Smith Kemble Harry Felin
F. O. Small Attwood Hencliel Dan
Beard Reinhart and Renington. Think
of having the World's fair done by such
expensive men as Howels Mark Twain
and Paul Bourget and sending such
as Charles S. Reinhart to Chicago for
a single number of a magazine to be !
sold for only 15 cents or by subscrip
tion 12I cents. A book publisher
preparing such a book would not dare
incur these expenses short of $5 00 11
copy. Is it not a revolution that is an
improvement upon old methods a re-
volution of- vast importance to the
reading public? The irder to winch'
reference is made reads us fullows:
"Publisher Cosmopolitan. Dear Sirs:
Of the 200000 copies of December
number to be sent us please send as
follow: 172650 copies regular edi-
tion 27250 copies R R. edition.
