It ij cm iwnlly fitting that the ctViU
jxed votltl should pny tiibuto to the
memory of Prof. Louis Pasteur whose
death i Parts occurcd Saturday after-
noon. One oi the foremost of the
crowd of industrious savants who
have devoted their lives to the science
of alleviating human suffering he won
his distinction entirely by dint of ijenius
4 and work. The result of his labors
" have their especial value to men of
science those in particular which re-
late tr. fermentation and to the polar-
ization of light being of a kind to give
Pasteur's successors food and oppor
tunity for study and work for manv
years to come. He was one of the
men in the van of scientific progress
men tyho outline the paths abng which
later workers must take their wav in
f reducing theory to practical results.'
i ne greatest of his works however
in the popular view must always be his
remarkable investigation ot hydro
phobia and its cure. Like Jenne r he
set out to prove a theory which gave
little promise of standing the lest of
practice. He conceived the nbtion
that the virus of hydrophobia might
be made by inoculation to prevent the
attack of the disease in those who have
been subject to it. With this theory
in mind'he worked along experiment
ing repeatedly until he thaught it safe
to try inoculation upon a human being.
What the successes of his efforts have
been is shown in the size of the throng
of afflicted ones who daily visit not
only the Pasteur Institute in Paris but
similar institutions in the larger cities
through the world. Inoculation for
hydrophobia is now a recognized
branch of medical science and is very
unlikely that a few years hence there
will be a single city of importance in
in civilization which will not have its
"Pasteur Institute."
France certainly has reason to be
proud of ihc dead savant and of Ins
work. He" helped to alleviate human
suffering bv destroying one ol the most
horrible and torturing of diseases. In-
somuch he was the world's benefac-
tor and his name will take place along
with Jenner's and Harvey's Chicago
