AUSTIN Tex. August 0. Gross ex-
amination of President R. E. Vinson
of tho University of Texns WfS re-
sumed this morning by W. A. Hangor
of tho counsel for Governor Fergu
son. Dr. Vinson declared that ho
thinks fraternities are an influence for
good when under tho proper regula-
tions by tho faculty and ho maintain-
ed that tliero nro now adequate reg-
ulations of them In force.
Ho Inclstod that class distinctions
do not now exist ns a result of thorn.
Ho sctd that ho had fond tin faculty
reports with reference to their In-
fluence and work and that he thought
himself "In agreement with those re-
ports in tho main."
Mr. Hanger (hen read Into the rec-
ord the faculty report of two years
ago in which tho fraternities wore
declared to bo "snobbish." It was
also Mserted that they woro taking
an unfair and unwholesome part In
tho student politics and that the mem-
bora of the fraternities ranked below
tho average in scholarship. This re-
port was made about tho tlihn the bill
wno Introduced In the Icgrslaturo to
abolish them.
Mr. Hanger asked Dr. Vinson if ho
considered 11I3 opinion In harmony
with that report Dr. Vinson said
that ho had not rend the roporbtliat
this was the Ilrst tlmo It had conto to
bin attention.
1 "Well don't those conditions still
provnll?" Mr. Hanger asked.
"No sir." tho witness answered.
"Then the niental make-up of the
studont body naa changed T" naked
Mr. Hanger
"This Is oxactly tho point 1 itn try-
ing to make" roplled tho witness
There was laughter from tho gal-
leries Mr. Hanger skipped from point to
point In tho testimony of Dr. Vinson
givon on tno proviouc day. naked a
few questions and then Lansing on.
When ho Avns asked nbout olRhty
younff women from the University who
aro now out teaching farmoru wlvej
how to preserve and coimervo tho
food supply. Dr. Vinson explained that
tho University merely prop-rod those
young women for tholr work In n ulx
week' eourso but that they wore paid
by tho. United States Department of
Agriculture. This brought roam nf
laughter and applause from tho gal-
lories. Chairman Fly demanded or-
dor nnd said that demonstrations of
that sort would not bo pormittod
Mr. Hanger finally brought nut that
thoro aro a considerable nuiubot of
porsong on tho payroll of tho main
University.
"Thoro is ono for ovorv tight stud-
ents" agreed Dr. Vinson "but ou.-
campus laborers and firemen do not
tench:"
Roars of laughter resulted when
Mr. Hanger asked Dr. Vinson If h-
had ever road that grent book of cow-
boy eongs by John A. Lomax secre-
tary of the Hnivosolty. I)r. Vinson
aid that ho had not.
"Then yon have never notlrod that
m on the front page which sayr-
Whon I die don't bury mo at alt;
Just pickle my Ijonee in alcohol."
"No. sir I have Hot." Dr. Vinson
replied "but I am going to ro-d tho
book Just as goon ae I can." This wao
said ii a manner that implied Mr.
Hanger bad rtlrrod an intorest In tho
book.
Tho crose examination nrobably will
require more than ono day.
