PLEDGE OF
ALLEGIANCE
James B. Upham, publisher of The
Youth's Companion, a leading mag-
azine for the young people of his day,
was disturbed at the drift of the nation
toward material idolatry and indiffer-
ence following the Civil War. He felt a
need to restore pride and idealism to
the America he loved.
For some years Upham had felt the
greatness and magnificence for which
the American flag stands, and he gave
flags to various schools and organiza-
tions. But he saw. in October 12, 1892,
an occasion to arouse the country to its
finer self. That Columbus Day marked
the 400th anniversary of the discovery
of America.
Through The Youth's Companion, he
got all the schools of the country be-
hind the project. Francis Bellamy, an
associate editor, wrote the original
pledge of allegiance. Each school class-
room in America was to have its stu-
dents repeat this pledge on October 12,
1892. That was to be it—no further use
of the pledge was planned.
From the original pledge the words
"my flag" have been changed to "the
flag of the United States of America,"
and in 1954 the phrase "under God"
was added after the words "one
Nation."
Our pledge of allegiance, 72 years
old in 1964, is now a permanent part
of our American heritage—one cher-
ished and loved by all.
