Race turns trotter

day's turkey trot at the NT golf course.

Runners capture gobblers
David Kuehn won the men's division,
Nancy Denniston captured the women's
division and Dr.Thomas Beitinger took
the faculty and staff division Monday in
the two-mile Turkey Trot at the NT golf
course.
Kuehn and Denniston each received
frozen turkeys for winning their divi-
sions.
Kuehn, St. Paul, Minn., graduate stu-
dent, came in first in a time of 10:19.
Dennistion, Fort Worth graduate stu-
dent, ran the race in 13:34. Dr. Beitinger,
of the biology faculty, won his division
in a time of 11:36.
Scott McCaskill, Arlington junior,
came in second in the men's division
with a time of 11:19. Keiley DeFoor,
Denton senior, took second place in the
women's division in 15:15. Dr. Richard
Armey of the economics faculty came in
second place in the faculty and staff divi-
sion with a time of 13:53.
The team title in the men's division
went to the Beer Pharz, comprised of
Kuehn, McCaskill, fourth-place finisher
Ron Baker and lOth-place finisher Eric
Kimball.
First place in the women's team divi-
sion went to Chi Omega.

unbearable.
The rules were explained, team cap-
tains drew lanes and the races started.
The race started out with a quick dash
to a bottleneck between a tree and a
fence. The pass was about 15 feet wide
and about 50 runners were going to try
to go through it all at the same time.
Someone was going to wait.
At the first turn, when anyone could
see how the whole race was going before
everybody got spread out, eventual win-
ner David Kuehn was in second place.
The second bottleneck was a muddy
road. This is where I decided to pick up
my pace and start trying to pass a few
people.
At the end of the muddy road, 100
yards later, I had caught up with Scott
McCaskill and Ron Baker. After one
look at McCaskill, I thought that he
would soon be behind me. I was wrong.
Four hundred yards later, McCaskill
made his move.
The mile-mark was in the southwest
corner of the golf course. From there the
course went north, into the wind.
The wind was at its worst in this
stretch. A mid-40s temperature, bare
legs and arms and running into the wind
makes for some eye-watering effort.
Hands are used to being cold,
forearms are not. That is the area that
felt the coldest. It was also the area that
tightened up the quickest.
The leaders were easy to see on this
stretch of the course. McCaskill had
worked his way into second place, but
Kuehn had already rounded th
northwest corner of the golf course ant
was on the home stretch.

TEXAS VS. A&M — Texas is headed
for a Bluebonnet Bowl game against
North Carolina — A&M heads home.
Final score: Texas 44, A&M 16.
OKLAHOMA VS. OKLAHOMA
STATE — The Sooners will wrap up the
Orange Bowl berth with a win.
Fin il score: OU 14, OSU 10.
HOUSTON VS. RICE — Houston is
headed toward the illustrious Garden
State Bowl with an unimpressive 5-4
record. Rice has played better than most
predicted and I think an upset is likely.
Final score: Rice 21, Houston 17.
PITTSBURGH VS. PENN
STATE — This game decides no con-
ference titles since both teams are in-
dependents, but it is the game for East
Coast football superiority.
Final score: Pitt 28, Penn State 24.

PRICKET!
UT-AUSTIN VS. TEXAS A&M —
Boo Aggies! Most years this would be a
good game, but not this time.
The Horns will spear the Aggies, 17-7.
OKLAHOMA VS. OKLAHOMA
STATE — There is no way anyone
should have to pick this "game." After
OU beat Nebraska, the Orange Bowl is
waiting and the only college football
team in Oklahoma will be there Jan. 1.
Sooner or later, OU explodes, 55-0.
HOUSTON VS. RICE — The only
reason to pick this game is inadequate
ability to choose games with meaning.
Houston will win, with Elston in,
38-10.
PITTSBURGH VS. PENN
STATE —At least this game has
national significance.
This game is the Pitts. 6-3.
