Club seeks members;
explores job options
By JERRY BOULWARE
Staff Writer
The NT Communications Career Club
is having a membership drive from 9 a.m.
to 1 p.m. through Friday in Speech Build-
ing 250, Misty Shatto, club president,
said.
A $5 membership fee is required to
join the club, she said. The fee. covers
the costs of speakers and refreshments
at the career forums sponsored by the
group. Any remaining membership funds
are used to cover the costs of social
functions.
Shatto said students do not have to be
interpersonal communications majors or
minors in order to join the club. "Just
interested people can join
"Basically, what we do is explore
possible careers in interpersonal and pub-
lic communication. Many people want
to work in the business world, but for
those who are interested in communication,
this is a way to figure out how communi-
cation and being in the professional world
come together," she said.
A series of career forums are sched-
uled each year to bring students and per-
sons involved in communications together.
The club plans four this year, two dur-
ing the fall semester and two next spring.
Shatto said. "We invite professionals from
the area to talk, who are involved in the
field of communications.
"1'he career forums definitely help
students. It helps them begin meeting
faculty members in a non-classroom situ-
ation."
Past speakers at the forums include
Shelly Lane, associate director of alum-
ni relations at Southern Mehtodist Univer-
sity; Sam Arnold, labor negotiator for
the United Steelworkers Union; John
Green, a computer programmer for Tan-
dy Corp.; and Doug Arnold, an indepen-
dent communications consultant.
Shatto said she does not know yet who
this year's speakers will be, because of
the difficulty in working with potential
speaker's schedules. "But most are eager,"
she said.
"Many people don't understand inter-
personal and public communications as
a major field of study. That's why we
have this organization, to see how we
can fit these things together."
The CCC was created in the fall of
1982. The club's adviser. Dr. Will Pow-
ers of the speech faculty, helped start
the organization because he felt the need
for one at NT. Shatto said. Some of the
goals are "to invite speakers, to stress
the importance of communications, to help
students build business contacts, a per-
sonal network with other students in the
same field.
"We also have a career option file
we're starting this semester." The file
will include the names of corporations
that have specific communication cmplo\
ment positions, she said.
The club also plans several social func-
tions in upcoming months. "We plan to
have a Green Derby Weekly at 4 p.m
Fridays at The Green Derby." a club on
Avenue A. "It starts Sept. 28. and will
probably run through the semester."
Also planned are occasional brow n-hag
lunches. "These help graduate students
who can't make the regular meetings, so
we can offer the graduate students some-
thing during the day." Also, for students
who are unable to attend the lorum, all
speaker's presentations will be recorded.
Shatto said the club is planning two
parties this semester. The first will he at
8 p.m. Friday at the Londonderry Oaks
Apartments clubhouse at I 351. ami Teasley
Lane.
Texas suspends warden after violations
HUNTSV1LLE (AP)—A Texas prison warden was
removed and suspended for failing to comply with a
federal court order involving the supervision of
prisoners, officials said.
Don Costilow, warden at the Texas Department
of Corrections Wynne Unit near Huntsville, was sus-
pended for two weeks without pay Monday, prison
spokesman Charles Brown said.
COSTILOW, who was warden at the unit since
1976, will be reassigned to another administrative
position with the department. Brown said.
Costilow was removed for violating a court man-
date that required prison staffers to supervise inmates
in certain sensitive work assignments. The proper
staff was supervising the inmates only when court
officials or other visitors were in the unit, a depart-
ment investigation showed.
MEANWHILE, the Houston County Sheriff's
Office is investigating the stabbing of two prison
officers Sunday during an administrative segregation
hearing at the Eastham Unit.
Brown said officers Gary Kessler and Jimmie Pace
were stabbed "for no apparent reason" with a 10-inch
shank made out of a clawed handle wrapped around
a sharpened screw.
