GROOMING AJf UNKNOWN FOR THE PRESIDENCY
l Tho Chanler "presidential boom syndicate Is industrial-
ly ;at work and It has attained some proportions In a few
localities. hen.the press bureau waB started to work
not one man In ten thousand hnd ever heard of Chan-
ler. and It there everwas. a case of the man seeking the
'officethis Is one. New York-thlnks she Is entitled to every
candidate simply because she is New York and the time
has been when neither party thought of naming ka Candi-
date without her consent.. But she has betrayed the trust
'if tho parties so often that Bhe "cad no longer control.
jEvenjHearst was a.memberot congress and was known to
(practically all the voters of the nation whenihp tried -tb
jWln the. nomination and almost every other name men-
tioned In. connection with the .leadership of either of the
old parties has something; In his history to give 'him the
shadow of a claim to the cofaBlderatlop Tne'ipresldentlal
office is ono that .requires more talent than to Inherit a
few millions frow onb's projectors. So far as wo have
been able to learn this is tho only distinguishing mark
of tho man who is being vigorously groomed for the
democratic nomination tor uio presidency. .Mr. uuamer
may bo a vory able man but tho democrats oi mis coun-
try do not know it nnd ho should do something to phoW
that he is entitled to consideration bcforo making sucn
- .itmi.ni ntumiii nnrtn hrt tirnf)uni itin hnnnr. The
Houston Post sizes up the sltuatibn and expresses the"
sentlment.ot tho South In tho following:
Tho Charleston News and Courier like most of
' tho Southern newspapers falls to discover any
morlt in tho movement now under way to secure
for young Louis Stuyyosnnt Chattier of Now Y6rk
tho democratic presidential nomination It Is not
surprising' to find nowspapors like tho Nows nnd
Courier out of svmnathy with a candidacy so ab
surd as. Chanter's and probably its solo objection
to him Is Bbmothlng like our own that lsto say
tn J nn cnnon n nrfllilnnttnt linBRlbllltV. JitSt how
it hnppens that a woll-balanced person can asso-
ciate Mr Chonlor's inherited wealth and his lim-
ited exporlonco as the presiding officer of the Now
Ydrk SUite senate with tho vast presidential office;
we can not for a moment Understand
Ordinarily a presidential nomlneo must have
some attribute of greatness or nl least a public
record of. distinction. Mr. Chanler has done ab-
solutely nothing to nttract tho attention of tho s
peopte nor IS it likely ha over will. Ho has never
said anything written anything or done anything
indicative of a single qualification for- tho. office
nor Is it probabk! that he will ever say. do or writo
anything to deeply Impress the. country.
Ho was elected lieutenant" governor of New
'York but that was an accident of politics brought
about as a result of unusual local conditions.
We are glad enough he was ele'cted but do not
think fpr n moment that his election to that Insig-
nificant offlco affords the slightest promise that he
could carry. the S'tate for president
As for his wealth that is not objectionable but
it might bo posltivelydlsastrous if It should occur
to"hlm to expend a. million of It to obtain either'
the nomination or election. The country wit-
nessed in 1.904 Mr. Hearst's style of campaigning
and was Bhocked by it. It witnessed a corrupt
campaign committee buy tho election in 189C and
in 1900; but tb'see a candidate himself backing
his polltldal ambition with a lavish outlay of
cash was a little too much.
The State a candidate halls from Is not likely
to count for very much next year. Time was
when locality was important but wo have had
so much political skyrocketing In thiB country for
six years past that the weary voters are likely
to look to the man rather than to the State. It
Is being realized right now that the whole country
needs a period of cessation from tho personal
pronoun style of government. Some strong quiet.

It has comedo 'the point-that the republicans think that
they are entltledUp'.the pie whether they are in a major-

they are not to have (he state offices they threaten to .in-

that the peoplo of the proposed nev? "state will bp kept
