Appetites el (teats sue tfsfi
Qoates sheep and hogs are in
a sense farm scavengers. In
many oases they eat grasses or
weeds or brush that are refused
by horses or oattle. The Influ-
ence of strong grasses and weeds
is recorded in the flesh of these
animals; giving to them a gamey
or wild flavor most pleasing to
tho palate. These domestic ani-
mals aro tho last to grow thin
and unfit for tho table. They
thrive when thoir neighbors fail
to And sustonanoo. This thrifty
disposition adapts both goats and
sheep to a wide range of condi-
tions and geography.
But the famous appetite of the
goat does not unfit him for the
better things of this life. Ho
quiokly turns f ron tin oans rags
and lint cotton to alfalfa ootton
sttad and corn. While rooky.
brushy pastures of the pine
ridges will afford a fine range for
sheep and goats they do nob
disdain the rich out over mead-
ows of the valleys.
This is a most excellent combi-
nation of feed and live stock.
The view shown is upon the R.
E. Smith farm so familiar to
Farm and Ranch readers. It is
this land to whioh referenoe was
made when it was stated that' it
carried 20 head of hogs per acre
during the season with little or
no grain and returned $120 per
aore. The goats had the run of
this same field and what they ate
seemed to have no impression
upon the well .established ocop.
Walking over these fields and up
the steeper hillsides the owner
remarked "it is time we had some
kids from this flook of Angoras."
We looked about the broken
hillsides most carefully for the
youngsters knowing that they
would be hiding on the high
ground finally returning to the
point where our searoh began.
And there at our feet was a white
shoe-string of a baby so feeble
that it was not afraid. A few
feet further away we found an-
other hidden seourely on a plain
surface as a jack rabbit hides.
These young ones are often the
prey of buzzards dogs .and other
prowlers in early spring. Texas
