Denial. From New York Not Understood
In Ausllri.
Special to the Dallas Nows.
Austin Tex. 'Sopt. 10. The
statement contained in a pub-'
lished dispatoh from Now York
today that the report that a com
pany had been formed in Texas
for the' purpose of building
the out-off for the "Santa FewaB
authoritatively .denied in that
oity was read here with muoh
surprise. It was certainly not
intended to deny that the oharter
of the pompany in question had
been filed here; That faot is a
matter of record. As to the
plans of the company and its
oqnneotion with: the Atchison
Topeka and 'Santa Fe the pro-
visibnof the oharter and the
names on the board of directors
make it plain that they are one
and the same sp far as all prac-
tioall purposes a're. concerned.
E. P. Kipley president of tne
Atohison Topeka and Santa Fe
is named as a member of the
board of direotors of the new
company. In addition to all this
evidence the charter of the new
company was written by Judge.
J. W. Terry of Galveston gen-
eral attorney for the Gulf Sys-
tem of the Santa Fe and in his
letter to Attorney General David-
son which accompanied the ohar-
ter Judge Terry went Bomewhat
into detail as to the purpose of
the new company.
He stated-that it was a Santa
"Fe project. That its objeot was
to build a out-off line-"in the
transcontinental route between
Galveston and California which
would ;be. about the same length
as the Souihern Papifio between
those points.
Why there' should.be any mys-
tery or seoretiveness about this
proposed out-off line is not under-
stood here. It has. been talked
of and written about for the past
ten years. The work of con-
structing the Njew Mexico end of
the out-off has been in progress
for some time. It is already
.built from Belen on the trans
continental line -to willard
where it connects with the Santa
Fe Central. From Willard to
Texico where it will connect with
the proposed Texas line is about
200 miles. It is said:that grading
is in .progress east of Willard on
that extension.

Floor of One Piece of Wood.
A cross sootibn out from a fir
tree 13 foot in diameter forma the
floor of an offioe of troo furniture
whioh has attraotod a groat deal
of attention in the Washinglon
state building at the Lewis and
Clark exposition. Tho big troo
from whioh the thirteen-foot sec-
tion was out grow' in Snohomish
county Washington.
The oross sootion Is about a
foot thiok with tho upper sur-
face polished so that it makes
an exoelleht floor. On it are sev-
eral other cross sections of small-
er trees which do service as
ohairs. They are of oedar. Some
.Of the. stumps thus utilized are
cut off andprolishedto form stools
while others' have been so carved
as to make a comfortable ohair
with a baok.
The oddest feature of this ex-
hibit is a. typewriter desk made
of a single fir log standing on
end. The log forms a oylinder
about four feet "high and three
feet thiok with a polished top.
One side has been out away un
derneath so i hat there is plenty
of room for stenographer's knees
In another part of the Snoho -mish
seotion a log six feet in di-
ameter has been used to make a
seat. The log has been oarved
so that a post a foot in diameter
is left in the oenter to form a
baok and the effect is similar to
that produced when a seat is
built around a tree.
