and a friend a man for whom in tho

country to tho west ot us As firm

who whila feeding on tho husks of
defeat knd disappointment had tho
courafio'io return to tho homo of his
ancestors.

Jtctiirn.s to Tarty
Prefacing his discussion of what ho
termed the issues of tho day tho
speaker made a defenso of his re-
turn to tho Democratic party after
having loft tho party and organized
what was known as tho American
Party in TeSatj. "I know that you do
not corao hero for tho purpose of wor-
shiping a hero" ho said "but because
you aro liberty-loving independent
American citizens and to hear tho is-
sues of tho day discussed "Wo aro
in a very grave situation? when tho
world holds its breath and Wonders
what will be tjio outcome of tho prin-
ciples of reconstruction."
"Already elnco my campaign-opened
thoy have spread It around that
Jim Ferguson can't pay his debts. No
I can't pay my debts and my situat-

Iho speaker laid the blamo for hard
times on tho Federal Reserve banks.

left the democratic party. 'While I
left tho party I never left tho prin-
ciples upon which It was founded.
Why haven't I just Us much right to
Kcavo tho party for a short time as
somo of those progressive democrat?
hao to leavo tho principles of tlv

back; I have forgiven them all; I
have met them halfway ahd now I
return to the house of my tatheig and
tight for their pilhclples."
Back to Principles
"Novpr has there been a time when
pooplo ought to got back to the mud-
sill principles Of democracy. We
must avoid ImpitlsHa Statesmanship
and get down to common every day
liorso sense. Tho speaker declaied
that the first plank in his platfoi-m
deals with suffrage and ho declared
that "the right of tho free ballot Is
greater than tho right of free speech"
"I am opposed to what ia known
as tho payment of the poll tax" ho
taid. "Tho speaker elaborated on this
phase of his platform declaring that
many men and women aro now bar-
red from voting in thq coming election
"because they didn't happen to have
as much money as other pooplo on ft
certain day. You can never call this
a free country" lie added "until you
restore tho freo ballot."

government when as a matter of

Tho speaker declared that money
was "made scare so that liberty
Bonds would bo thrown on tho mar-

York bankers buy them up and then
sell them at par." The. speaker de-
clared that "there is a spree bf ex-
travagance in New York and you and
I nre paying for it.'' As a means of
reliovlng thq situation tho speaker
declared that the "threo billions of
bo put into circulation."
"X would take two billion of It and
give 5500 to each ex-soldler and pay
tho other million to government em-
ployes. That would get it into circu-
lation and wo T.'ould havo better
times."
Other issues were also discussed by
tho speaker. "Avitcn I Ko to tho ben-

troduced which will make it a peni-
tentiary offepso to charge more than
C percent for money. A man can't be
a Christian ajid. chargo interest for
money; it is not right as a matter of
religion. I would also have tho 'rent
nog' sent up b.:ung with the man who
charges moro than C percent for
money loaned."
A plea for better provision for the
country schools of the state and nat-
ion was also Hindu and a denunciat-
