CltOWBS OF IMMIGKANTS.
Th'o crest of a -WaVo.of foreign iniini
gralton Hccins to haVo struck Fort
Worth. It la possible that the lucrens
ed number of foreigners who nro mov-
ing to .the Panther city .or'1 passing
through Is' Ule advanco guard of Iho
stream that the United States govern
nient has been attempting to divert
from tho crowded coolers of tho coun-
try (o Uio Southwtfst.
That this -Influx of crrolgnors is only
a recent thing Is nttcstcd by the po-
licemen who havo tho unlpn station
beat hnd by tho employes of tho rail
roads. Tho latter aro very often called
upon to read tho tickets for the for-
eigners and to glvo them directions
about getting to their tralnsior about
leaving Uio stations. Policemen are
also generally appealed to by tho Im
migrants to assist them. It has been
romarked of late that an unusual num
ber of foreigners who aro unablo to
read the English language is passing
through tho city over tho different
railroads.
In many Instances these people- are
unablo to make themselves under-
stood even to a railroad man or a
policeman. In such a predicament it
is necessary for the patient officer to
go In search of an acquaintance who
can speakywebrew Gorman Italian
or Spanish. .One policeman stated Sat
urday that he nad discovered a mer
chant who is himself of foriegn ex-
traction about two blocks from the
union depot and to him he always ap
peals when an Immigrant lands In the
depot and can not make himself under-
stood. Ho carries the foreigner to this
merchant who can at least tell what
nationality the man is and then can
assist him in finding one of his coun-
trymen. Tha policeman declares that
it Is worth all his trouble to see the
delighted expression on the foreigner's
face when he discovers some one who
can speak hiu mother tongue.
But it is not the foreigner alone
who Is forced to appeal to the police-
man or railroad man to read his tick-
et for him. Oftentimes an American
will purchase a ticket and then take
the ticket to a bystander to see if
the agent has sold him the proper
transportation. Fort Worth Star.

his back had given out. He could not
