spite
on the
of the
Newspapers and Pree Passes.
Some of the members - of the
legislature who are piqued at
.the newspapers of the state for
Oritioizing their riding to Austin
on free passes on the railroad
and then oharging the state up
with' their fare have inserted a
clause in the anti free pass bill
prohibiting the railroads 'from
malting advertising contracts
with the newspapers payable in
transportation and the bill has
already passed the senate and
we understand is likely to pass
the house and become
This clause is the result
work pure and simple
park of those members
legislature who resent the aotion
of the newspapers in showing
hemjup for riding on the railroads
and then collecting from the state
for their mileage and who know
that by acoepting passes they at
least place themselves in a. posi-
tion to be approached by the
railroads -when they want legis-
lation for their espeoial benefit.
But the legislature may pass all
the laws of this kind that it wish
es and it will yet not affect the
transaction of legitimate busi-
ness between the newspapers and
railroacts. The railroads
and the newspapers will
still be doing business together
when these pouting legislators
y have been relegated to private
lio by their dlsoerning constitu-
ents. There can be no effeotive
law passed that will present the
railroads from buying: advertis-
ing from the newspapers and as
long as they buy the newspaper
men will have the transportation
it may be depended upon. Thero
is a good deal of. talk about the
free passes of newspaper men
on the railroads when as a. mat-
ter of faot there is not a newspa-
per man in the state that is rid-
ing on a free pass and there has
not been for several years News
paper men pay for their trans-
portation by advertising the ting
oards and the various excursions
of the railroads and) there is
hardly a one of them that doe's
not pay for". af;long 'ways more
than he'gets. The difference be-
tween the newspaper man and
the legislator is-.that the former
paya-ior nis so -.caned tree pass
while that of the latter is expeot-q
ed to be paid for in influence
that isdosigned to be used '.un-
biased in tho -interest of1 the peo-
ple. One is obtained on legiti-
mate business principles and the
other savors of bribery and cor-
ruption. That's the difference'

Old Harness.
Three years ago we were com-
pelled to lay aside a set of har-
ness that was made in Wisconsin
and brought to Nevada by one of
tho early settlers in the north-
western part of the state. This
set of harness' yas between 30
and. 40 years old when put out of '
business. Some years they were
greased some years; they were
not. However what is more im.
portant than.greaso is the quali-
ty of leather put into the harness
