not be trimmed the first two years
and he is borne .out by the theo-

apple orohard of 100 trees" grew
rapidly and bruited prolifically
but when Ke sold the plaoe they
died in three years.

This he had applied to the
trees from the limbs down every
spring and not an inseot toubled
them so long as the trees were
treated.
This was many years ago and
he has reoently read an article
advising orohardists to soak tow
Baoks in a thiok solution of lye
soap and hang them in the forks
of trees. Every time it rains the
soap which dries in the air is
precipitated and runs down the
tree and onto the roots.
The writer olaims that all in-
sects are thus destroyed and the
trees will live long and bear free-
ly. .
This is plausable and worth
trying as it oosts soaroely any
thing. An application of the

its use in thejjoap as the la
distributes the lye gradually.
This country has only a small
(per cent of fruit trees as compar-
ed with its wants. Plant more
and try soap as protection.

LEESOT'S O-BaCERY
Cantaloupe at Wichita.
The cantaloupe orop has been
virtualy gathered and marketed.
There are yet a few shipments
that may be made -by express
but the shipments in car lots are
over. The experiences of the
farmers who tried cantaloupes
this season as a money making
orop is varied. Where the mel-
ons were in good shape and were
properly handled they brought
a fairly good price. But where
they were not in good condition
or were poorly handled the price
was disappointing. Raising and
handling cantaloupes in this
country by irrigation is like ev-
erything else it has to be learn-
ed. When this is done and the
knowledge of how to handle them
as well as grow them is acquired
there is no reason why oanta-
loupe ruising should not be as
profitable under irrigation in
NViohita' oounty as anywhere in
tho World. It is thought that
some raisers used too mUoh wa-
ter on their orops and mado tho
motonB too watery. The oxpori-
olujo.of tne raisers of oantaloupes
this season will be ot value to
those who raise them next year.
