M. (I. Dunn naval reerultlas officer
at this point has received notice of
an amendment to the bill establishing
the Naval Deserve. This amendment
allows the reservist to avoid doing
actual senlce In time of poace during
his first enlistment in tho reserve
unless he so elects. However It Is
necessary for him to serve at least
two months in the four years of bis
flrst enlistment It bo desires to enlist
In tU reserves a second term Officer
Dunn suggests that all former navy
men see him and arrange a meeting
date at his office in the Federal build
ing so that tho recruiting officer at
Dallas may come out and enlist them
In tho reserves. His office is now lo-

Mr and Irs. Snolgrove arrived In
town coming direct from Ueglna. Can-
ada where thoy hae spent the wint
ter Mrs. Snolgrovo is the eldest
daughter of Mrs. Kato Potefish of this
city. Mr and Mrs. Snolgrove aro quite
prominent in the theatrical world of
the east and the extreme west having
spent all last summer in Soatle
Washington. They will bo hero bov-
eml weeks before starting for Alas-
ka where they aro duo to appear in
Dawson City. Yukon.
An Iowa truck fanner irrigates bis
land by pumping water from an arte-
sian well with a pump to which bis
automobile is attached.
An automatic Jack has been Inven
ted that lifts an automobile clear of
the floor of a garage or tho ground
as it is run over tbo device.
Tho trend of modern times appeals
to wanton and niakesXthom moro In-
terested In sanitary foodstuffs and in
the enfo and dollvcry of groceries.
Just now It seems nccogsnry to call
attention to great quantities of can-
ned good that aro bolng sold at re-
ducod prices to make room for this
season's produce. Thero Is no objec-
tion In tho world In patronizing Biicli
sales aud making tho best of jour op-
portunity for a bargain but reject all
cans and tins that show rust around
the tops or bottoms or bnvc a dent or
a swollen place on tho shies.
Safety first is nowhere so necessary
us in tlio home and arrangements
havo been mado with most rood deal-
ers by manufacturers to return all
battered or 'damaged cans and some
rebate Is usualy offered. Therefore
these damaged goods nro not a total
loss to grocors but thoy are to tho
housekeeper.
Swelled places on cans show that
there Is gas caused by decay within.
Dents moan that the cans have been
knocked about and that air may havo
reached tho food. Hust comes from
dampness and when It is on cans you
can bo almost posltlvo thoro Is an air
hole In tho container.
Food that la packed In tins must
bo air tight to bo fit for food. Pto-
maino poisoning Is ono of tho most
dangerous wo know. When It does
not cause immediate suffering and
horrlblu death In every cabo it is
responsible for so-called stomach
trouble many times.
As soon as a tin of fish meat peas
corn tomatoes or any food Is oponod
turn it nt once from tho can and so
prevent the groA'tli of poison.
Physicians say that cancers. Indi-
gestion d)spe)sla nervousness head-
aches and other" ailments conio from
ptomaine or poison foods. Tho won-
der 1s that wo do not have more
deaths from this cause for I have
often been one-half of a can of vege-
tables used and tho remainder
placed still In tho original tin In
tho cooler until the next meal aud
not infrequently is fihh left standing
in oiien cans! If wo were not natur
ally strong and hoalthy wo would t
succumb to such criminal .careless-
ness Instead of complaining of
"tummy-aches" and headaches so
frequently.
