Popular elections of United States senators has been
demanded by tho nntlonal dtmocratlo organization for
yiiars ns a fundamental lnallcnnblo right.
The platform adopted at Denver on July 10 1908 de
clares:
'"Shall tho people rule?' is tho overshadowing issuo
which manifests Itself in all tho. questions now undor
discussion . . . Tho right of tho petoplo to freely
solect their officials la innllenable and cannot bo delegated."
Tho language Bhould bo pondered carefully by the
state democratic executive committee of Georgia at this

At a conference Qf democrats hold at Saratoga Nf Y.

York Democratic League It was BOt forth:

gives the following reminder to domocrats:
" If tho democratic nominee for tho presidency is to
represent democratic principles ho should bo a man
vhoso record Justifies tho belief that ho favors tho
election of United States senators by popular vote."
"Without dissenting volco with no diversity of opinion
democrats everywhere have declnred for grenter freedom
for tho people in selecting tho men who nro to rule over
them.
What is tho situation In Georgia?
In tho JIacon platform adopted two years ago "a strong
utteranco was Incorporated demanding that the people
bo allowed always to name their officials; and denounc-
ing bosslsm and convenion methods.
In the Atlanta platform adopted. in Soptember last
popular elections wero insisted upon.
Thoro is the record! That 13 briefly tho history of tho

But It will never bo until real husiness methods nro

Governor Colquitt to our thinking has struck tho koy
note in demanding of the heads of departments that com-
petency bo tho test of appointments. The heads of tho
various departments will be allowed to select their own
subordinates in most cases nnd will bo held responsible

Tho list of murders reported nearly every day in tho
.newspapers of tho country Is simply appalling. Espe-
cially waB tills true In tho reports Wednesday Tho
man who can read of these awful tragedies and not bb
tmado to think ot the seriousness of tho situation Is not
easily Impi'ossed. This pnper believes that our next
legislature should make It a penitentiary offonso to
carry a pistol unlawfully and that a man who commits
.murder should ho immediately arraigned for this offense
it acquitted of tho killing. And nnothor good (law would
"do to require that all doputy sheriff's appointments bo
xatlttcd by the Commslsolnors court In regular session
and their appointment published .and no ono but working
deputies bo allowed to carry weapons. This should bo tho
samo with city officers.

Can Georgians rise on the floor of congress and de-
fend popular elections If their own stato should go
bnck on this supreme dcmocratls demand? '
It Would furnish a whip handle to tho eneniy which
would be tipped with tho lash of ridicule.
The question is squarely beforo tho state democratic
executive committee. They will act on tho demand of
the people expressed In divers ways or thoy will Ignore
platform demands capnblo of but onq construction.
If they taUb a backward step now thoy must accept
the penalty Of popular distrust and even strnlghtoiit
disgust x
Tho Issue Is square cut. On the oiio sfdo Is a domand
ttrnt tho people should elect. On tho other the settlement
of tho quesffon by a legislative Jack-pot.
Machine politics versus popular rule.
When tho Georgia legislature meets ' noxt summer
nearly four year's of Senator Clay's term will remain to
bo filled two-thirds of a full term.
The peoplo selcctod Senate Clary and demand that
right to naniQ his successor. Those who stand between
them and this right admitted In tho past' a3 Just and
reasonable must answor to tho peoplo.
Tho qnndldnto who fenrs to submit his candidacy to tho
peoplo thereby admits a fear of the people .
To Ignore tho storm signals to disregard ropeated
warnings and delay actlpn until It Is too lato will bo
a frnnk confession of unfnlthfulness.
Is the stnto committee willing to labor under that im-
putation? This Is no tlmo for a democratic state to waver in Its
alloglanco to a great democratic principle.
