The Smallpox at Truby.
From C. B. Scarborough who
hear-i Dr. Shappard Jones ooun-
ty'shealth officer make his ro-
port to the commissioners court
wo learn thatthts case of smallpox
at Truby is undoubtedly -genuine
but is quite mild. The officer
vacoihated all those who had
been exposed or are likely to be
so far as passible and did' what
he could to keep tho. disease from
spreading.
Frank Sears father of the bby
who is now suffering with tho
disease is siok and is supposed
to bo taking the contagion.
A young man named Matthew
who had been to DallaB where
smallpox is rife and was siok at
Truby two weeks is thought to
have taken the disease to Truby
but none of his own pooplo have
taken it so far.
Tho Roportor sincerely hopes
that it will not spread further.

THE TERM "IDIOT."
1st the Orlfclnnl Greek It Slmglr
Meant it t'rlVnte Teraen.
The word Idiot is Itself of Interesting
history. Its primary Greek Rlgulflcnuca
was that of n private as distinguished
front" a public person. Our words
idiom Idiosyncrasy etc. arc from th
game root. Tho Idiot In Greek was sim-
ply one not enKagcd In public ntfulrs.
The beginnings of the degradation of
the word nre shown In Its application
soon to the common people as distin-
guished from the upper classes. It was
then applied to unprofessional and lay
people and soon became the slurring
title of the unskillful and awkward.
By Blow degrees It became applicable
to tho stupid and at Irtst to the lmbe-
cllo and ldlot. As late as the sixteenth
mid seventeenth centuries the word
was still used in its earlier senses. This
long sad history speaks Indirectly of
tho pathetic history of tho imbecile. If
he was not Killed or starved to death
by neglect etc. ho was usually reduced
to the condition of n beast either about
the houso or fields or whs actually
driven into tho woods and forced to live
ln Caves among wild animals etc. In
1700 Hard took a "wild boy" found in
tho forests of Avcyron and tried to
teach him. The ability of the wild
boys and wolf children to live and the
number that did so shows that Idiocy
as we have later learned Is of nil de-
grees and that u mind may be various-
ly defective In some ways even Idiotic
but-In others with capabilities well pre-
served. Blind Tom the pianist and
the largo number of mathcmatlc Idiots
nre examples that show how far we
are from understanding the real nature
of Idiocy and they nidre than suggest
of the defective tho possibility of s"6ii
ing upon the one or few normal or even
highly developed faculties nnd per-
haps bringing others Into co-ordination
with them and to normnllty. The court
fools and jesters of the olden times
wero often such partial Idiots find de-
fectives nnd they truly lived upon
tllelr "wits" which were often better
than those of their masters. American
