Smithville Hospital gets

More than a full year of
filing reports. preparing
surveys and budgets paid off
for Smit hville Hospital re
cently as the Texas Depart
ment of Health Resources
issued a license authorizing a
ten bed increase at the local
facility.
Smit hville Hospital's 25
bed capacity has been
increased to U5 beds A five
bassinet nursery was also
authorized where newborns
not requiring isolation
were previously allowed to
remain in the room with the
rout her.
W in \ erbui Hat tie
Credit for obtaining the
license goes to Smithville
Hospital Chief of Staff Dr.
Dareld Morris and to Sam
Fowler. Hospital Admin
istrator. Roth Fowler and
Morris prepared all reports
and personally appeared
before the Texas Health
Facilities Commission on at
least two occasions in the
past year. Before the
commission, the two gave
oral arguments on behalf of
the hospital in order to
obtain the certificates of
nc«>d. which must be issued
before application is made
for the final authorization.
It Couldn't
He Done
Morris and Fowler were
authorized to pursue all
steps necessary to acquire
the license to expand the
hospital following a July
1977 meeting of the Hospital
Hoard in w hich the need for
more beds was discussed.
Hospital architect Bob
Itatho and past admini
st rat or Chelsea Taylor had.
at that time, argued that the
ten new beds could not be
licensed, stating that the
county has an overpopu
lation of hospital beds.
But. Boaid President
Albert Crawford had the
forsight and authorized the
two gentlemen to seek and
obtain proper permission to
utlilize the new beds, an
action which the community
of Smithville will benefit
from for years to come.
Aiffect On The
Communitv
"The hospital will now
have the capability to
provide more and better
healt h care, especially in the
areas of Obstetrics. Surgery
and Newborn Care." Fowler
told the ADVERTISER.
According to Hospital
Comptroller Ron T. Payne,
"Everyone in Smithville will
benefit economically from
having a larger health care
facility." Payne said the new
beds and five bassinets
increase the worth of the
hospital by "almost a million
dollars."
The banking and business
community will also benefit,
Payne said, "because the
payroll will increase from
$650,000 to $950,000 annual
ly."
The hospital will be
purchasing more goods and
services from the Smithville
area, another step which will
give a financial boost to the
business community once
the ten beds are in use.
No Expansion
Necessary
Sam Fowler told the
ADVERTISER that the
physical plant will not have
to be enlarged to accomodate
the increased bed capacity.
He said that when the
hospital was remodeled and
enlarged several years back,
the extra rooms were
prepared at that time.
Fowler said the rooms were
used for storage or as office
spaces until this license
could be obtained.

Wednesday negated an
agreement between Mayor
James P. Sharp and Aqua

which would have allowed
the city based utility com

The council curtailed Aqua
