Accounts receiveoble
peril Elgin hospital
Hospital Administrator
Fred Nyc last week blamed
the lack of physicians at
Elgin Community Hospital
for the recent termination of
employment of three hospi-
tal employees.
Nyc explained that doc-
tors are almost entirely
responsible for the revenue
of a hospital, and while at
least two Elgin doctors use
the facility, it is just not
enough; Elgin Community
Hospital is again suffering a
lack of funds, Nyc announced
last week.
According to the Adminis-
trator, the cash flow at the
hospital is two to three
months behind schedule,
stating that Elgin Commun-
ity has, "$70,000 to $80,000
in accounts receivable". He
blames Medicare and Medi-
caid oases for some of the
footdragging.
Dr. Robert S. Ray, visiting
radiologist at Elgin L'om-
munity Hospital, and part of
the Corporation which now
owns the old Fleming
Hospital, said his hospital
was forced to cut its staff
only after cuts in inventory
and operating expenses
failed to provide adequate
relief from a declining
income.
Both Dr. Ray and Nyc
stated that fewer people

this time of year, adding that
many people in the areas
served (which include Coup-
land, McDade, Manor and
Lexington) are going to
Austin for their medical
care.
History is Repeated
The Elgin Hospital Auth-
ority was formed in 1976
when the hospital was going
under because of a physician
shortage.
It was a goal of the
Authority to attract new
doctors to Elgin to increase
the revenue of the hospital.
But when the Authority
realized defeat and threaten
ed to lock the doors of
Fleming Hospital in June,
McQueeney radiologist, Dr.
Robert Ray, arranged the
purchase of the hospital from
the Authority and to get it
running again.
Two Doctors Hardly Enough
Elgin's two doctors, Dr.
Jose Garcia and Dr. Herbert
Munden both use the
Community Hospital, and for
now, according to Nyc. it
appears the hospital is not in
jeopardy at this time, but
both Nyc and Dr. Ray issued
a plea last week for area
residents who owe the
hospital to pay their
accounts.
