suddenly-from your magic palm
flies orion, back to his brave home.
i search the sky-is it complete now?
i find security in its nightly repetitions,
but this night holds no hope
the dread fills me again: Alpha Centauri,
nearest star to the earth, is gone. is it
somewhere-or simply gone?
i feel something burning into my palm.
i must separate myself from this smell
of searing flesh-so i toss the
immense brightness from my hand
into the empty spot.
and Alpha Centauri shines again.
triumphant, i turn to you:
but your mind is elsewhere.
have you seen my magic feat?
i follow the spears from your eyes
to the eye of Taurus, and even as
i watch the aim of your concentration,
the star falls into an ocean of darkness.
security is gone, why do you alter the sky?
