Juan sat and gazed at the wonder-
ful valentine, thinking how much he
wanted to give it to Anita. While
across the street he saw Carlos talk-
ing to Pedro and showing him hi3
twenty-five cents, Juan sighed.
The balumtine, the beautiftil ba'um-
tine, was exactly dos rea'es or twer-
ty-five cents, and if Juan did not buy
it soon, Carlos would give it as a
present to Anita.
Then Juan saw a man comina up
the street with a heavy case.
"Carry your bag, Senor'>"
The man gave Juan the bag and at
the hotel a few minutes kite" le re-
sented him with dos reales an i Jua
hurried to the store.
"Balumtine, bootiful pink balum-
tine for dos reales," cried Juan, and
purchasing his treasure he returned
to the street.
Juan took it to school and gave i:
to Anita, who blushed and exclaimed:
"Es por mia?" and clasped the bal-
umtine to her heart, and Juan went
walking away on great, lacy, rolling,
pink valentine clouds.

It was the twelfth of January, the
night of the annual masquerade of the
Dramatic Club. The great hall was
exquisitely decorated with crepe pa-

the walls, giving the whole ball a
weird effect as th-1 shm'ows plaved
about. From a little bacony at th<s
end of the hall, a Spanish orchestra
broke forth into that ever popular
air, "Valencia." Gay couples came
whirling and skippntr with graceful
loutine into the hall. Some were
dressed as pirates, otlv.rs as elfs and
demons, while others represented al
most every other imaginable charac-
