Nice Weekend
For Wylieites
Wylieites enjoyed a near-
perfect weekend, weather-
wise. for February!
Skies were mostly fair for the
entire three-day period and
temperaiures ranged from
the middle thirties to the
mid-fifties for the weekend.
No precipitation was reported
throughout the area.
Outlook was for slightly
warmer with a possibility of
showers at mid-week.
Read The News I
Many would say 1 am wasting
my time in writing this, but I
have always been compelled
to write such a letter as this
when I sense something
unfair, abusive, or simply
stupid. In a sense I believe
my comments to follow
include some concerns about
all three areas.
For years I was told never to
locate my household in an
area served by General
Telephone Company, but I
never realized thst telephone
service could be so bad. I
truly did not realize that the
poor quality of service I am
experience as a resident of
Wylie could cost so much for
so little.
In order to be equipped with
facts to illustrate my point 1
began to keep a log during
December 1982 snd January
1983. I was able to record
seven instsnces where ser-
vice was unusable with
service problems varied from
no dial tone, excessive static,
cross-talk, and simply a dead
telephone. Some of these
problems were not corrected
for many hours and I am
certain of many more such
problems where it was not
convenient for me to record
the details.
Receiving poor service from
the telephone company is
something new to me since
until moving to Wylie 1 had
grown to view the household
telephone as something that
almost never failed to work.
That was my experience until
moving into the General
Telephone exchange. The
difficult aspect of it all is that
1 am paying a premium rate
for this questionable quality
of service.
A recent article in our local
newspaper outlined yet
another rate increase sought
by General Telephone in all
of its Dallas area exchanges.
This follows a significant
increase in rates including a
recently added charge of
$8.75 for "Extended Area
Service" which was added
despite the fact not a single
added service came about
from the rate increase. We in
Wylie and the other
exchanges where this was
done had been able to use
"Extended Area Service" for
many years (the dialing of
metroplex central offices.) By
simply calling the service
something new and by
convincing the regulatory
authorities that the service
was new or at least should be
considered separately the
company was able to increase
rates significantly with out
addiing service. 1 might add
that customers can not reject
this "Extended Area Ser-
vice" to obtain a lower rate.
That is not possible even if
one wished to limit service to
Wylie telephones which
would be almost unusable.
As a CPA with a grasp for
business and a licensed
radio-telephone technician as
well I am aware that it cost
money to provide good
telephone service and meet
growing service demands.
General Telephone has used
this argument over and over,
but their service is still very
much substandard despite
some PUC announcements I
have heard to the conuury.
I would also like to know what
Mr. Langley of General
Telephone means when he
states in the (newspaper)
article that earnings have
fallen to 9.5% from 12.5%.
The question is 9.5% of
what? Is it 9.5% of gross
revenues, investment, or the
average value of pizza plants
in New Jersey? 1 suspect it is
9.5% of investment in plant
and equipment (measured at
fair market or replacement
value of course.) Since the
customers can not get to the
real justification for paying
more for less. 1 implore the
PUC to do so and be moset
certain this rate increase is
justified and will result in
more effective service to
General Telephone custom-
ers in the Dallas area.
Yours truly.

Dear Editor.
I desire to speak to
responsible parents on behalf
of the children that God has
entrusted in our care. As they
grow into teen-agers and
then adults they will have
enough problems dealing
with the immoral issues of
life. Lei's not add an
additional burden in the
years to come with "legalized
gambling" in the form of
Bingo.
They will need to learn the
principles of God, and if they
learn them they will
recognize that gambling in
any form violates God's law
and thus is not appropriate
for a Christian life.
May we all have a proper
respect for God's law and
vote "NO" to "legalized
Bingo" on April 2nd.
Thank you,
Willis Dykes,
