Lone Star Steel employ-
ees each month receive
cash awards for ideas they
offer through the com-
pany's suggestion plan.
Each idea submitted on
paper is carefully con-
sidered. An impartial com-
mittee at the plant screens
the results of investiga-
tions and is empowered to
make awards of up to $25
on the spot. Ideas that
seem to have a greater
value are referred to a
committee composed of
senior officers of the com-
pany. This committee is
headed bv President G.A.
V. E. GODSEY
Wilson.
Employees have collect-
ed amounts in the hun-
dreds of dollars for valu-
able suggestiions.
One of the recent win-
ners is V. E. Godsey of
Lone Star. Godsey is a
millwright in the mech-
anical maintenance depart-
ment and suggested an
idea to save time in clean-
ing filters in a piece of
pipe mill equipment.
Under the old system,
periodic cleaning of filters
required that the machin-
ery be dismantled. Godsey
suggested hooking a com-
pressed air line to the
equipment to blow sedi-
ment from the filter with-
out having to take it apart.
His ingenuity resulted
in a check covering an
award of $75.
It was the result of
thinking about his work
and spending a short time
putting his idea on paper.
Ideas like Godsey's have
resulted in annual savings
to Lone Star that last year
were estimated to be over
$140,000.
