Attendance down
at fire drills
Attendance at the drills of
the Naples volunteer fire de-
partment have dropped below
the level required by the State
Board of Insurance.
The board requires that a
minimum of 17 volunteers
participate in the twice month-
ly drills in order to maintain
the low insurance rate now
assigned to property in the
city.
Vacations and shift work at
the plants have taken several
of the firemen out of the drill
activities during the summer
and that is part of the cause
of the low attendance.
At the Monday night drill
this week, Hix Wommack of
the Red River Ordnance fire
department presented a film
on artificial respiration and
external heart massage. Sev-
eral of these films are planned
for the winter months and a
first aid course will begin in
the near future.

Alton Bishop of Gilmer
has his name in the news
because, last week, he
lifted a spoon of steel
and started a century.
Bishop is a first helper in
Lone Star Steel Com-
pany's open hearth de-
partment and it was he
who poured the sample
of Northeast Texas steel
that eventually will be
part of a statue in Wash-
ington's Smithsonian In-
stitution.
The ceremony celebrat-
ing the beginning of the
second century of com-
mercial steel production
in the U. S. was observed
by steel companies across
the nation. About 50 prom-
inent citizens, company
officials, and radio, tele-
vision and newspaper rep-
resentatives were on hand
to watch Bishop pour the
sample.
The first helper, by
now a veteran of the
open hearth department,
began his Lone Star ca-
reer in August, 1953.
This was the year that
Lone Star first made steel
and Bishop started as a
utilityman.
A native of Upshur
County, he attended Un-
ion Ridge High School
and served in the infan-
try during World War
II. Following the war, he
was in the wholrcale lum-
ber business, n came
to Lone Star.
His wife operates a
kindergarten in Gilmer.
It is housed in a "little
pink schoolhouse" built
by Bishop. His son is a
center on the Buckeyes
team this year and he al-
so has a daughter in jun-
ior high.
