AWC discusses nutrition at Feb. 7 meeting
The Atlanta Woman's Club met
Feb. 7 for a luncheon in the home of
Evelyn Beard. Marie Hanner led in
prayer and everyone was served an
international feast as each member
was asked to bring a dish of a dif-
ferent country and wear a costume
of that country.
After the luncheon, a short busi-
ness meeting was conducted by
President Mozelle Smith. Pat Kelton
gave the Free Report and Sue
Sinclair gave club members infor-
mation about the McDade House,
which is a home away from home
for relatives of the seriously ill in a
Shreveport-Bossier City hospital.
The past five years it has provided
lodging to nearly 7,000 relatives that
stay for weeks or months. Each
year Atlanta Woman's Club con-
tributes to the home.
"What is Good Nutrition" was the
topic of the program. Pat Hogan
quoted Dr. Joe Nichols, "It is natural
food, poison free, grown on fertile
soil, eaten fresh, and not over-
cooked." She added that in recent
years life at the dinner table seems
to have changed significantly. Every
day people are confused about
proper nutriton. For many, trying to
figure what to eat and how much
simply takes the pleasure out of din-
ing. Over the past decade has come
a steady stream of warnings about
the dangers of too much fat and
cholesterol in the diet and the need
to eat less animal protein and
sweets and more fibers, fruits and
vegetables.
There is this thing that healthy
eating is punishment, that it can't
taste good and be good for you.
Then she said again that it is im-
portant to have good nutrition. You
can ease up on meat, add more
grains, vegetables, fruits and beans
to meals. Choose low-fat dairy
products. Find grams of fat on
prepared food. Cook meals in any
method except frying — microwave,
steam, broil, poach, braise, bar-
becue, roast, stew, stir fry, etc. To
keep recipes low in fat, use sub-
stitutions.
Europeans, especially the
French, seem to eat more sensibly
than Americans do. They eat less
than we do, small portions, more
fruits, and they never snack. In the
U.S.A. more than 30 million people
are classified "obese." They starve
to death under mountains of food,
because they are the victims of an
artificial age. Our foods are grown
with artificial stimulants, protected
from insects and diseases with ar-
tificial poisons, and the harvested
crops are subjected to such a multi-
tude of artificial processes that eat-
ing them is making us into artificial
people.
