The Sea Will Tell,' says
author of true drama
Mark Harmon stars as a former rodeo rider who becomes a migrant worker in
a desperate attempt to support his family during the Depression in Long Road
Home, Monday on NBC.
Mark Harmon plays lead
in Depression-era drama
Past more and more
like the present
By Amy Schmidt
"When they need their crops picked
they call us migrants. And when we
have them all picked they call us bums
and tell us to get the hell ofT," wrote
Grapes of Wrath author John
Steinbeck.
The year is 1937. Ertie Robertson is
an injured rodeo rider who moves his
family to California's San Joaquin
Valley to harvest crops. The pickers are
paid but a nickel a box and are so poor
they have to live in tents. Ertie's son
wants to join up with the union, but
Ertie's only concern is to feed his
family on a day-to-day basis. And he
wants nothing to jeopardize that.
"I used to read a script and think,
'Gee, this is a great story and a great
character, and I want to do this,'" said
Harmon, the star of NBC's Dust Bowl
drama Long Road Home, premiering
Monday, Feb. 25."Youonlyhavetodo
a few movies or a few projects that turn
out very different from what you first
read to when they eventually come out.
My judgement now, I think, has a lot
more to do with who's involved,"
continued Harmon. "I've admired
John Korty for a long time, and 1 was
thrilled to get the opportunity to work
with him."
Long Road Home, co-starring Lee
Purcell (To Heal a Nation) and Morgan
Weisser (Extreme Close-Up) is a gritty
drama directed by Korty. Korty has
done a lot of movies looking back at
topics of social importance including
six-time Emmy winner The Autobio-
graphy of Miss Jane Pittman and
Farewell to Manzanar.
"I think that we are definitely going
into a very difficult period for America
economically," said Korty, making the
parallel between the Great Depression
days and joblessness and homelessness
today. "I think this story may strike
chords in many Americans, whether
they experienced the 1930s or not. 1
hope it will serve to remind us of the
basic strengths that make it possible to
survive depressions, wars and other
calamities — family loyalty, pulling
together, and helping one another."

Richard Crenna stars
in grisly, exotic tale
By Amy Schmidt
You have to wonder if attorney/auth-
or Vincent Bugliosi ever lies awake at
night listening for little noises in the
house, uneasily glancing about the dark
room for movement. Bugliosi is the
man credited with putting away cult
murderer Charles Manson, and he is
the author of Helter Skelter.
On Sunday and Tuesday, Feb. 24 and
26, the dramatization of the lawyer's
latest book, And the Sea Will Tell, will
air as a four-hour miniseries on CBS.
This time, however, you'll find Buglio-
si on the side of the defense. Richard
Crenna will play Bugliosi; Crenna's
co-stars include Deidre Hall, James
Brolin, Rachel Ward and Hart
Bochner.
Interviewing the attorney, the sound
of his voice struck me as odd. It is
higher pitched than I would expect for
a trial lawyer — more like that of a
door-to-door salesman. Notwithstand-
ing, he speaks rapidly, intelligently and
vividly when describing the story
behind And the Sea Will Tell:
"A young woman was walking along
the beach, and she sees something
glistening in the sun. She gets a little
closer, and it is the gold filling of a
scorched human skull. And there was
an odd container next to it, and some
other skeletal remains. The lid had
come off, and it's apparent that the
container has served as a kind of a
coffin,"
This was the fate of Muff Graham
and presumably her husband, Mac. In
1974 the upper-middle class couple,
trying to get away from the hubbub of
San Diego, set sail in their lavishly
outfitted sailboat to a tmv deserted
island in the Pacific. There their paths
crossed with those of Buck Walker and
Jennifer Jenkins. Buck and Jennifer
had fled civilization as well, but for a
very different reason. They were
fugitives. They had escaped Hawaii in
a leaky boat, had barely made it to the
shark-infested island, and were run-
ning out of food, subsisting on cocon-
uts and the few fish on the island that
were not poisonous. It was a juxtaposi-
tion of the "haves" and "the have-nots"
isolated from society and any laws and
Richard Crenna stars as real-life
author/criminal attorney Vincent

modes of conduct.
The Grahams never returned from
the island, but Jennifer and Buck
turned up in Hawaii in the Grahams'
boat The Sea Wind. The two were
convicted of boat theft until 1981,
when Muffs body was discovered and
they were charged with murder. Bug-
liosi look to Jenkins' defense.
The trials made headlines. People
and The New York Times both carried
the story, and Truman Capote con-
sidered writing a book about the
incident.
"The prosecution's theory was a
simple theory, simple arithmetic," says
Bugliosi. "Four people on an island,
two end up dead, and the other two end
up with their boat, acting very su-
spiciously; four minus two leaves two.
They must both be guilty. And it was
my job to try to convince the jury that
four minus two leaves one — the man."
But don't make any assumptions about
the outcome of the trial, says Bugliosi,
because you'll be surprised.
"The irony struck me immediately in
this case," further remarks the lawyer
about the bizarre circumstances
behind And the Sea Will Tell. "So
many people have the feeling that they
want to get away from it all, get a boat
and travel the seven seas. And to think
(the Grahams) would find hell in this
island that's supposed to be a
paradise...." < > I V Listing Inc
