Atlanta's 75 Years
(by Will C. Hornsey)
Atlanta, Texas is the home of a
lady whose life's history as a
business woman and a builder of
homes and places of business, can-
not be surpassed by any other
woman in the State of Texas. Yes,
in the world of business and build-
ing, this lady occupies a most
unique sphere.
This lady is also the second au-
tomobile mechanic to ever operate
in the city of Atlanta, Texas. She
personally did this mechanical work
herself and revealed the fact that
she was not afraid of manual
labor.
Also, she owned and operated the
first beauty shop ever to be in
the history of Atlanta, Texas. This
beauty shop was located over the
Walker Drug Store in the year of
1922.
Also, this lady was the first
Woman Chauffeur to ever operate
service cars in the State of Texas.
She drove a service car for more
than eight years from 1914 to 1922.
She drove a service car that con-
veyed drafted men for World War
1 to Linden, Texas for examina-
tion for military service.
This lady built the first 20-room
hotel ever to be constructed in
the city of Atlanta, Texas. This
hotel was The Baker House, which
recently burned.
This lady is the first woman to
serve as a Life Insurance Agent
In Cass county as well as in At-
lanta, Texas.
Also, this woman is the first
lady to build homes for sale in
Atlanta, Texas. She has built 94
homes in our city. Fifteen of them
are duplexes. This energetic
woman has transformed the area
along the Shreveport Highway
from a wilderness into a scene of
pretty homes. She has completed
| 11 homes along'that highway. She
i has built 56 homes in the western
i section of Atlanta, Texas and 13
j homes in the eastern section of
| our city. She personally plans all
I her homes and no two homes are
I alike. Her average sale-price for
| her homes is 7,500.00.
This lady has recently opened
a new addition to our city. Here
she plans to build 24 new homes.
Each one of them to be a brick
veneen located in the eastern sec-
tion of Atlanta, Texas, and de-
signated as Lillian Heights.

A COLLOQUY
By E. Shelton
"Hello my friend," said a cow,
To Doctor Dick. "Tell me now,
Which is greater, you are me?
1 admite I'm up a tree,"
And Bossie smiled a bow.
Old Dock Dick, stupefied
At this onset, stood wide-eyed,
Thought he, "Never, South or East,
Had he converse with a beast,
Therefore, he must now act wise."
"We-11," said the doc to the cow,
"It's true, you don't sow nor
play"—
"No," said Bossie, "but I reap,
And through the night while you
sleep,
I make the milk for your frow."
"Physiology, you know,
And how Vitamins make bones
grow,
Yet, how little you esteem
A mother's milk rich with cream;
That gives her child a healthy
glow."
"Hold on there, your talk is rot—"
Old Dock Dick was getting hot,
"No darn man, much less a cow
Can tell me what's good for
chow,
Be it for babies or not."
"Then why contend," quoth the
cow,
And deep shame wrinkled her
brow,
"That the child's own mother"s
milk,
Which is full of Human ilk,
Should be given to a Sow?"
"Poof! That's all the sense you
got—"
Old Doctor Dick was still hot,
"When I try to build you up,
Wham! Ye kick over the cup
And you think that helps a lot."
"I'm what God meant me to be,"
She laughed, "But you, you see,
Are trying like stag kine,
To make your kids bawl like
mine,
And that's where we disagree."

assigned to other units for ad-
vanced training.
Commanded by Brigadier Gen.
Claude B. Ferenbaugh, the 5th Ar-
mored Division is one of the most
famous armored divisions of the
past war. The division participated
in the Normany invasion in 1944
and fought through France and
Germany with Gen. George Pat-
ton's Third Army.
The division was reactivated at
Camp Chaffee to train recruits
from Texas, Oklahoma, Mississ-
ippi, Arkansas, New Mexico and
Louisiana in the "know how" of
ground warfare. Realistic training
will be given all recruits assigned
to the division by officers and en-
listed men who "learned the ropes"
in actual combat.

Time to buy trucks
on something besides hearsay!
Y
ou can't afford to buy trucks by
guesswork today. What you carry-
how far and fast you carry it —under
what road and traffic conditions —all
must be considered in specifying the
right truck for you in times like these.
That's our specialty as a GMG truck
dealer — we are first and foremost
transportation engineers. Our one aim is
to recommend the exact combination of
engine, frame, axles, transmission, cab
and optional equipment that is best
suited for your year-round needs.
Come in and see us—whether you want
a Yz'ton pickup or a giant Diesel 90,000
lb. GCW six-wheeler. We can give you
exactly the right truck — designed for
longer mileage with less maintenance
expense —and it will be a real truck,
engineered for your type of work.
That's why CMC sales are greater today
than ever before. Truckers find they
are best in the long haul. Let us show
you why.

After the passing of 75 years,
Atlanta, Texas is now a very beau-
tiful city. As you motor over
the different sections of Atlanta,
you will find pretty concrete side-
walks and paved streets, modern
and up-to-date homes with all
modern conveniences as well as
an outstanding High School
and churches.
Recently, I visited the newest
city in the United States. It is
Boulder City, Nevada. Nineteen
years ago, the area upon which
that city stands was a barren
dessert. But about seven miles
from Boulder City, Nevada, the
great Hoover (Boulder) Dam has
been constructed. The employees
of The Boulder Dam have built
for themselves this pretty city. I
spent the night in Boulder City,
Nevada, and the next day, we tour-
ed the city. 1 found it to be a
new city. New side-walks, and
paved streets, every place of busi-
ness is new as well as every
home. Not one old-looking house
can be found in Boulder City, Ne-
vada. It is a city that stands
now where a few years ago was a
barren desert. Yes, men and wom-
en with brains for building have
erected a city that is supreme
in beauty and design. Yes, here
we see where, "The desert shall
blossom as a rose."
Our little city of Atlanta, Tex-
as has been blessed with citizens
of a vision of the future to build
and establish Atlanta, Texas as one
of the most progressive cities in
Texas.
This lady of whom I here write
and who has carried out such a
marvelous building program here
of Atlanta.
While at Camp Chaffee, they
will get specialized training in
ground warfare. At the end of
their basic training they will be
in our city, is Mrs. Lillian Oliver,
Atlanta, Texas.

We Ask That
Fares" Play Fair
Judge Cunningham was telling
about a taxi ride he took over to
the County Scat last week. The cab
was all littered with cigarette
butts, plus candy and gum wrap-
pers. This annoyed the Judge and
he spoke to the driver about it.
To his surprise the cabman an-
swered right back. "Don't blame
me," he said "Fast as I clear this
taxi out, the fares just mess it up
again. I like a clean cab as well as
anybody, but a man has to have
some co-operation!"
Judge figures the fellow was In
the right, and maybe we ought to
do a little campaigning with the
public. I agree with him—that's
why I'm writing this article.
From where I sit, it's important
for us to remember the fellow
who's going to get in the cab after
we leave it. Because he pays the
same as we do, he's got the same
right to a clean, comfortable ride—
just as he has the same right to
enjoy the beverage of his choice
(be It coffee, heer, lemonade, or
what have you).

Ever since Oldsmobilc introduced the "Rocket" Engine two years ago, seems
like everybody claims "high-compression"— but nobody explains it.
The phrase simply means squeezing the gasoline into a smaller space before
exploding it. This gets more power out of the same amount of fuel. But
the engine must be designed lor high-compression nil the way through to assure
smooth, quiet, gas-saving performance. The "Rocket" is 100% high-compression
—from the crankshaft out. And the lowest-priced "Rocket" Engine car is
Oldsmobilc's "88." Makes good sense to try it soon—doesn't it?
