QC's Fifth Graders
Reintroduced To Music
Along with reading, science and math, Queen City-
fifth graders will also be introduced to the elements of
music to round out their education.
The music class is required for all fifth graders. It is
being reintroduced after a year in limbo.
"Before the move to the new elementary school, all
children in kindergarten through fifth grade took
public school music. Grades six through 12 could elect
to take band," said John Bird, high school music direc-
tor.
"Grades kindergarten through four moved to the
elementary school, and fifth grade went to the middle
school. Last year they were sort of left in between.
There was no music program for them," he said.
This year is a different story with the addition of Les
Pack to the Queen City music staff.
Pack is a recent graduate of Henderson State
University in Arkadelphia, Ark. He has a major in per-
cussion instruments, including keyboard percussion,
such as xylophone, marimba and vibes. He also has an
extensive background in guitar and bass. Jazz is one of
his favorite styles of music.
He plans to take the fifth graders through the basics
of music.
"The class will be an introduction to the basic
elements of music - rhvthmic studies, harmony,
melody, timing and notation. I may get into the dif-
ferent periods and composers with them a little bit
too," Pack said.
"For the students who decide to go into band in the
sixth grade, the fifth grade training will make it easier
for them to learn their instruments," he said.
"When they go into sixth grade band, about all we'll
have to do is teach them where to put their fingers,"
Bird said.
"It will help the band program overall, but the fifth
grade class is not just for those going into band," he
said.
Bird and Pack will team teach the sixth grade band
this year. While one is putting the entire group through
their paces, the other will have a small group of
students in another corner of the room giving them in-
dividual instruction on their instruments.
Another new vista in Queen City's music program
this year will be the addition of a music elective for
seventh and eighth graders.
"It will either be a course in music appreciation or,
maybe, choral music," Pack said.
This year the music directors estimate there will be
75 students in high school band and about 88 in junior
high band.

Betty Johnson Coordinates
CF Week In Douglassville
The observance of National Cystic
Fibrosis Week in Douglassville will be
followed by a door-to-door fund-raising
campaign Sept. 25 through Oct. 8.
Mrs. Betty Johnson will coordinate
the educational effort and organize the
fund-raising, according to Fred
Greene, president of the Northeast
Texas chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation.
The purpose of Cystic Fibrosis Week
is to increase public awareness of this
country's number one inherited killer
of children and young adults, and the
door-to-door campaign will help raise
the research funds which are the only
hope of the CF community.
Cystic fibrosis is a fatal disease that
attacks the lungs and digestive
system. It produces a thick, glue-like
mucus that makes breathing difficult
and impedes digestion. The disease
suffocates and starves its victims.
For more information contact the
local chairperson or the Northeast
Texas chapter at 2405 Cedar Springs,
Suite 211, Dallas, Texas 75201.
Ijterature will be distributed by the
chairperson or is available from the
chapter.
